Claims
- 1. An oligomerization process for the production of oligomers having high saturated octane numbers, said process comprising:
- a) passing an oligomerization zone feed comprising C.sub.3 and/or C.sub.4 olefins to an oligomerization zone and contacting the oligomerization zone feed at oligomerization conditions with an oligomerization catalyst;
- b) passing a heavy saturate stream comprising paraffins having a carbon number of at least 8 into contact with said feed and said catalyst;
- c) recovering an oligomerization effluent stream comprising said paraffins and C.sub.8 isoolefin products.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the oligomerization conditions include a temperature of 200 to 500 F..degree., a pressure of 100 to 1000 psig, and an LHSV of 0.5 to 5.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein said oligomerization zone operates at a temperature in a range of from 300 to 400.degree. F.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein said oligomerization stream is passed to a separator and separated into a product stream comprising C.sub.8 isoolefins and said heavy saturate stream, a portion of said heavy saturate stream is recycled to said oligomerization zone, a portion of said heavy saturate stream is rejected from the process and heavy paraffin stream is combined with said oligomer effluent stream to provide make up paraffins for said heavy saturate stream.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of said heavy saturate stream enters said oligomerization zone with the feed.
- 6. The process of claim 1 wherein said feed stream comprises C.sub.5 olefins.
- 7. An oligomerization process for the production of oligomers having high saturated octane numbers, said process comprising:
- a) passing an oligomerization zone feed comprising C.sub.3 and/or C.sub.4 olefins to an oligomerization zone and contacting the oligomerization zone feed at oligomerization conditions;
- b) passing a heavy saturate stream comprising paraffins having a carbon number of at least 7 into contact with said feed and said catalyst to the oligomerization zone to maintain at least a portion of the combined heavy saturate stream and feed in liquid phase conditions in the oligomerization zone;
- c) recovering an oligomerization effluent stream comprising said paraffins and C.sub.8 isoolefin products.
- 8. The process of claim 7 wherein the oligomerization conditions include a temperature of 200 to 500 F..degree., a pressure of 100 to 1000 psig, and an LHSV of 0.5 to 5.
- 9. The process of claim 7 wherein at least 50 wt % of the combined feed and heavy saturate stream are in liquid phase in the oligomerization zone.
- 10. The process of claim 7 wherein the oligomerization zone is maintained in a substantial liquid phase.
- 11. The process of claim 7 wherein said oligomer stream is passed to a separator and separated into a product stream comprising C.sub.8 isoolefins and said heavy saturate stream, a portion of said heavy saturate stream is recycled to said oligomerization zone, a portion of said heavy saturate stream is rejected from the process and a heavy paraffin stream is combined with said oligomer effluent stream to provide make up paraffins for said heavy saturate stream.
- 12. The process of claim 7 wherein said oligomerization effluent stream is separated into a product stream comprising C.sub.8 isoolefins and a higher boiling bottoms stream, a portion of said bottoms stream is purged from the process and a portion of said bottoms stream is passed to a saturation zone to saturate olefins and provide said heavy saturate stream.
- 13. The process of claim 7 wherein said heavy saturate stream comprises C.sub.8 to C.sub.20 paraffins.
- 14. An oligomerization process for the production of oligomers having high saturated octane numbers, said process comprising:
- a) passing an oligomerization zone feed comprising C.sub.3 and/or C.sub.4 olefins to an oligomerization zone and contacting the oligomerization zone feed at oligomerization conditions with an oligomerization catalyst having a Hammett acidity function of less than about -6.0;
- b) passing a heavy saturate stream comprising paraffins having a carbon number of at least 7 into contact with said feed and said catalyst;
- c) recovering an oligomerization effluent stream comprising said paraffins and C.sub.8 isoolefin products.
- 15. The process of claim 14 wherein said oligomerization zone catalyst comprises a protonic acid having a Hammett acidity function of not more than -5.0.
- 16. The process of claim 14 wherein said oligomerization zone catalyst comprises a solid phosphoric acid catalyst.
- 17. The process of claim 14 wherein the oligomerization conditions include a temperature of 200 to 500 F..degree., a pressure of 100 to 1000 psig, and an LHSV of 0.5 to 5.
- 18. The process of claim 14 wherein said heavy saturate stream comprises C.sub.8 to C.sub.20 paraffins.
- 19. A process for the production of high octane C.sub.8 isomers by the oligomerization of an isobutene containing feed stream, said process comprising:
- a) passing an oligomerization zone feed comprising C.sub.4 olefins and a paraffin recycle stream comprising paraffins having at least eight carbon atoms to an oligomerization zone and into contact with an oligomerization catalyst at oligomerization conditions including a temperature of 200 to 500 F..degree., a pressure of 100 to 1000 psig, and an LHSV of 0.5 to 5;
- b) recovering an oligomerization effluent stream comprising said paraffin stream and C.sub.8 isoolefins;
- c) passing said oligomerization effluent stream to a separation zone and separating said effluent stream into a lighter fraction comprising C.sub.8 isoolefins and a heavier fraction comprising paraffins having at least 8 carbon atoms;
- d) rejecting at least portion of said heavy fraction; and,
- e) passing at least a portion of said heavy fraction to said oligomerization zone as said paraffin recycle stream.
- 20. The process of claim 19 wherein said portion of the heavier fraction is passed to a saturation zone to saturate heavy olefins and produce a saturation zone effluent and said recycle stream comprising a portion of said saturation zone effluent.
- 21. The process of claim 20 wherein the saturation zone comprises a hydrotreater.
- 22. The process of claim 19 wherein the concentration of olefins in the olefin portion of the oligomerization zone feedstream is at least 50 wt % isobutene.
- 23. The process of claim 19 wherein said oligomerization zone catalyst comprises a solid phosphoric acid catalyst.
