Claims
- 1. A process for preparing 6-methoxy-2-naphthaldehyde, which comprises brominating or chlorinating a compound of formula (II): ##STR7## in the presence of a free radical initiator, and subsequently a) converting the compound of formula (I): ##STR8## in which X is bromo or chloro and Y is hydrogen using the Sommelet reaction or base catalysed hydrolysis followed by oxidation, or
- b) converting the compound of formula (I), in which X and Y are identical and represent bromine or chlorine, by hydrolysis;
- and thereby produce 6-methoxy-2-naphthaldehyde.
- 2. A process according to claim 1, in which a compound of formula (I), as defined in claim 1, wherein X and Y are identical and represent bromine or chlorine is converted to 6-methoxy-2-naphthaldehyde by hydrolysis.
- 3. A process as in claim 1 in which X and Y of formula (I) are both bromine or chlorine.
