Claims
- 1. In a continuous process for preparing adenine by reacting an arylazomalononitrile of the general formula: ##STR5## wherein Ar is an aryl group, with formic acid or its derivatives in the presence of ammonia at an elevated temperature to produce a 4,6-diamino-5-arylazopyrimidine and subjecting the resulting reaction mixture to a reaction under a catalytic reduction condition in which catalytic reduction of the 4,6-diamino-5-arylazopyrimidine and cyclization of the resulting 4,5,6-triaminopyrimidine into adenine take place, the improvement which comprises carrying out the catalytic reduction in the substantial absence of ammonia, wherein before carrying out the catalytic reduction, ammonia is removed by gradually opening a closed reaction vessel and bubbling an inert gas through the reaction mixture while it is still hot.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the amount of ammonia present in the catalytic reduction system is from 0 to 5% by weight based on the liquid component of the system.
- 3. A process for preparing adenine comprising
- (a) reacting an arylazomalononitrile of the general formula: ##STR6## wherein Ar is an aryl group, with formic acid or its derivatives in the presence of ammonia at an elevated temperature to produce 4,6-diamino-5-arylazopyrimidine,
- (b) immediately removing ammonia from the resulting reaction mixture of step (a), and
- (c) immediately subjecting the resulting reaction mixture of step (b) to a reaction under a catalytic condition, thereby causing catalytic reduction of the 4,6-diamino-5-arylazopyrimidine and cyclization of the resulting 4,5,6-triaminopyrimidine into adenine, the catalytic reduction being carried out in the substantial absence of ammonia.
- 4. The process of claim 3, wherein before carrying out the catalytic reduction, ammonia is removed by gradually opening a closed reaction vessel while the reaction mixture is still hot.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein the removal of ammonia is conducted while bubbling an inert gas through the reaction mixture.
- 6. The process of claim 3, wherein before carrying out the catalytic reduction, ammonia is removed by reducing the pressure in the reaction system.
- 7. In a continuous process for preparing adenine by reacting an arylazomalononitrile of the general formula: ##STR7## wherein Ar is an aryl group, with formic acid or its derivatives in the presence of ammonia at an elevated temperature to produce a 4,6-diamino-5-arylazopyrimidine; and subjecting the resulting reaction mixture to a reaction under a catalytic reaction condition in which catalytlc reduction of the 4,6-diamino-5-arylazopyrimidine and cyclization of the resulting 4,5,6-triaminopyrimidine into adenine take place, the improvement which comprises removing ammonia from the resulting reaction mixture prior to the catalytic reduction, and carrying out the catalytic reduction in the substantial absence of ammonia.
