Claims
- 1. A method of preparing a substituted or an unsubstituted phenylglyoxal from a corresponding substituted or unsubstituted acetophenone, comprising the step of reacting said acetophenone in water with a source of a nitrosonium ion in the presence of a strong acid.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the source of nitrosonium ion is a compound of the formula NO.sup.+ X.sup.- wherein X is a halogen, sulfate, phosphate, nitrite, or acetate.
- 3. The method according to claim 1 wherein the source of the nitrosonium ion is a nitrosyl chloride.
