Claims
- 1. A process for making an alkoxy cyclic amide which comprises anodically alkoxylating a carboxylic acid amide of the formula ##STR9## wherein: R.sup.1 =hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 8 carbons, an aryl group of 6 to 10 carbons, alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbons, benzoxy or phenoxy,
- R.sup.2 =c.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkylene and
- Y'=hydrogen, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkyl or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkoxy with a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkanol in the presence of a conductive salt selected from the group consisting of alkali metal and tetra-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)alkylammonium-tetrafluoroborates, hexafluorophosphates, nitrates and mixtures thereof at a temperature of up to 100.degree. C.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the quantity of electricity used is from about 2 to 5 faradays per mol of starting compound.
- 3. A process according to claim 1 wherein the conductive salt is selected from sodium and potassium tetrafluoroborate and hexafluorophosphate and tetramethylammonium tetrafluoroborate.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein the concentration of the conductive salt is from about 0.01 to 2.0 mols per liter.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein the electrolysis temperature is from about 0.degree. to about 60.degree. C.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 wherein the molar ratio of carboxylic acid amide to alkanol is about 1:1 to about 1:100.
