Claims
- 1. A process for preparing 3-phenethyl-2-cyanopyridine of the formula: ##STR4## which comprises reacting 3-phenethylpyridine-N-oxide of the formula: ##STR5## with a carbamoyl halide of the formula: ##STR6## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are C.sub.1-4 alkyl or, taken together with nitrogen atom to which they are attached, pyrolidinyl or piperidinyl and X is chloro, bromo or iodo, to obtain a 3-phenethyl-1-carbamoyloxypyridinium halide of the formula: ##STR7## in which R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and X are as defined above; and reacting the pyridinium halide with an alkali metal cyanide in aqueous solution.
- 2. A process of claim 1 in which the alkali metal cyanide is sodium cyanide or potassium cyanide.
- 3. A process of claim 1 in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are methyl and X is chloro.
- 4. A process of claim 1 in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are methyl and X is chloro.
