Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a compound of formula (I): ##STR5## in which R.sup.1 represents a methyl, ethyl, isopropyl or sec-butyl group, by treating a compound of formula (III): ##STR6## wherein R.sup.1 is as defined above, with selenium dioxide in the presence of a carboxylic acid of formula (IV):
- R.sup.2 --COOH (IV)
- wherein R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen atom to produce said compound of formula (I) together with a compound of formula (II): ##STR7## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are as defined above and optionally, hydrolizing said compound of formula (II) to form said compound of formula (I).
- 2. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein R.sup.1 represents a methyl, ethyl or isopropyl group.
- 3. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein said compound of formula (III) is a compound where R.sup.1 represents a methyl or ethyl group or is a mixture of such compounds.
- 4. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein R.sup.1 represents an isopropyl group.
- 5. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein greater than 1 mole of said carboxylic acid of formula (IV) is employed per mole of said compound of formula (III).
- 6. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the molar ratio of said selenium dioxide to said compound of formula (III) is from 1:1 to 10:1.
- 7. A process as claimed in claim 6, wherein said molar ratio is from 1:1 to 3:1.
- 8. A process as claimed in claim 1, effected at a temperature of from 0.degree. C. to 80.degree. C.
- 9. A process for preparing a compound of formula (I): ##STR8## in which R.sup.1 represents a methyl, ethyl or isopropyl group by treating a compound of formula (III): ##STR9## wherein R.sup.1 is as defined above, with selenium dioxide in the presence of a carboxylic acid of formula (IV):
- R.sup.2 --COOH (IV)
- wherein R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen atom, to produce said compound of formula (I) together with a compound of formula (II): ##STR10## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are as defined above and, optionally, hydrolizing said compound of formula (II) to form said compound of formula (I).
- 10. A process as claimed in claim 9, wherein greater than 1 mole of said carboxylic acid of formula (IV) is employed per mole of said compound of formula (III).
- 11. A process as claimed in claim 9, wherein the molar ratio of said selenium dioxide to said compound of formula (III) is from 1:1 to 10:1.
- 12. A process as claimed in claim 11, wherein said molar ratio is from 1:1 to 3:1.
- 13. A process as claimed in claim 9, effected at a temperature of from 0.degree. C. to 80.degree. C.
