Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of an optically active hydantoin derivative of the formula ##STR34## wherein Y and Z are the same or different, each being a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and Hal is a halogen atom, which comprises steps of reacting an optically active compound of the formula ##STR35## with an alkali metal cyanide and ammonium carbonate, reacting the resulting optically active compound of the formula ##STR36## in the presence of a solvent and an acid catalyst, with a compound of the formula ROH, wherein R is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, while azeotropically removing water as it is formed, reducing the resulting optically active compound of the formula ##STR37## and reacting the alcohol group in the resulting optically active compound of the formula ##STR38## with a halogenating agent.
- 2. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein said reduction of the compound IV is carried out using lithium aluminum hydride.
- 3. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein said halogenation of the compound V is carried out using thionyl chloride as the halogenating agent.
