Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a phenyl butyronitrile defined according to the structure: ##STR78## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and each represents hydrogen or methyl comprising the step of intimately admixing a compound having the structure: ##STR79## with isobutyronitrile having the structure: ##STR80## in the presence of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of sodium hydride and lithium diisopropyl amide having the structure: ##STR81## at a temperature in the range of from about 90.degree. C. up to about 130.degree. C. for a period of time such that the compound having the structure: ##STR82## is produced in a yield in excess of about 65% according to the reaction: ##STR83##
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein R.sub.1 is methyl and R.sub.2 is hydrogen.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen and R.sub.2 is hydrogen.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen and R.sub.2 is methyl.
