Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of a trans piperidine derivative of the formula ##STR23## wherein R is a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl which comprises contacting a corresponding cis-substituted piperidine derivative of the formula ##STR24## wherein R is defined as above, with an aldehyde in a carboxylic acid of the formula R.sup.1 COOH, wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3)alkyl; and separating said trans derivative of the formula (I) from the resulting mixture.
- 2. A process of claim 1 wherein the aldehyde is salicylaldehyde.
- 3. A process of claim 1 wherein R is methyl.
- 4. A process of claim 2 wherein R is methyl.
- 5. A process of claim 1 wherein R.sup.1 is methyl.
- 6. A process of claim 2 wherein R.sup.1 is methyl.
- 7. A process of claim 3 wherein R.sup.1 is methyl.
- 8. A process of claim 4 wherein R.sup.1 is methyl.
- 9. A process for the preparation of a trans-piperidine derivative of the formula ##STR25## wherein R is (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3)alkyl, which comprises the steps of: (a) contacting a corresponding cis-substituted piperidine derivative of the formula ##STR26## wherein R is defined as above, with an aldehyde in a carboxylic acid R.sup.1 COOH, wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or (C.sub.1 -C.sup.3)alkyl, to form a mixture of trans and cis compounds of the formulas ##STR27## (b) conventionally esterifying said mixture of compounds of the formulas (I) and (IV) to form a mixture of said trans and cis derivatives of the above formulas (II) and (III); and
- (c) separating said trans derivative of the formula (II) from the mixture.
- 10. A process of claim 9 wherein the aldehyde is salicylaldehyde.
- 11. A process of claim 9 wherein R is methyl.
- 12. A process of claim 10 wherein R is methyl.
