Claims
- 1. A process for preparing the antibiotic 10-dihydrosteffimycin which comprises cultivating Actinoplanes utahensis, having the identifying characteristics of NRRL 5614, in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions in the presence of the antibiotic steffimycin until substantial conversion of steffimycin to 10-dihydrosteffimycin and recovering 10-dihydrosteffimycin.
- 2. A process, according to claim 1, wherein steffimycin is present in the fermentation medium in a concentration of about 1 to about 100 mg/l.
- 3. A process, according to claim 2, wherein steffimycin is added to the fermentation medium at about 36 to about 48 hours after inoculation to a concentration of about 25 mg/l.
- 4. A process for preparing the antibiotic 10-dihydrosteffimycin B which comprises cultivating Actinoplanes utahensis, having the identifying characteristics of NRRL 5614, in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions in the presence of the antibiotic steffimycin B until substantial conversion of steffimycin B to 10-dihydrosteffimycin B, and recovering 10-dihydrosteffimycin B.
- 5. A process, according to claim 4, wherein steffimycin B is present in the fermentation medium in a concentration of about 1 to about 100 mg/l.
- 6. A process, according to claim 5, wherein steffimycin B is added to the fermentation medium at about 36 to about 48 hours after inoculation to a concentration of about 25 mg/l.
- 7. A process for preparing the antibiotic 10-dihydrosteffimycin B which comprises cultivating Chaetomium sp. (BB 427), having the identifying characteristics of NRRL 11442, in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions in the presence of the antibiotic steffimycin B until substantial conversion of steffimycin B to 10-dihydrosteffimycin B, and recovering 10-dihydrosteffimycin B.
- 8. A process, according to claim 7, wherein steffimycin B is present in the fermentation medium in a concentration of about 1 to about 100 mg/l.
- 9. A process, according to claim 8, wherein steffimycin B is added to the fermentation medium at about 36 to about 48 hours after inoculation to a concentration of about 25 mg/l.
- 10. A biologically pure culture of the microorganism Chaetomium sp. (BB 427), having the identifying characteristics of NRRL 11442, said culture being capable of producing the antibiotics 10-dihydrosteffimycin and 10-dihydrosteffimycin B in a recoverable quantity upon fermentation in an aqueous nutrient medium containing assimilable sources of carbon, nitrogen, inorganic substances, and steffimycin, and steffimycin B in said respective fermentations.
