Claims
- 1. A process to produce a catalyst that is useful for interactions between organic sulfides and mercaptans, which process comprises the steps:
- (a) adding a moderately acidic aluminum containing support to a solution of phospho Group VIB oxide acid in polar diluent;
- (b) mixing the material from said step (a) for a sufficient length of time to allow said phospho Group VIB oxide acid to react and impregnate onto said moderately acidic aluminum containing support, thereby forming a supported catalyst;
- (c) drying said supported catalyst of said step (b) thereby forming a dried catalyst; and
- (d) sulfiding said dry catalyst of said step (c) under conditions sufficient to fully sulfide the catalyst,
- wherein said phospho Group VIB oxide acid is within the range of about 0.01 to about 10 weight percent based on the total weight of the catalyst.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein said phospho Group VIB oxide acid is selected from the group consisting of phosphotungstic acid and phosphomolybdic acid.
- 3. A process according to claim 2 wherein said moderately acidic aluminum containing support is selected from the group consisting of metal aluminates and aluminum phosphate.
- 4. A process according to claim 3 wherein said support is zinc aluminate.
- 5. A process according to claim 4 wherein said phospho Group VIB oxide acid is phosphomolybdic acid.
- 6. A process according to claim 3 wherein said phospho Group VIB oxide acid is phosphotungstic acid and said moderately acidic aluminum containing support is aluminum phosphate.
- 7. A process according to claim 1 wherein said phospho Group VIB oxide acid on said support is within the range of about 0.5 to about 3 weight percent based on the total weight of the catalyst.
- 8. A process according to claim 7 wherein said phospho Group VIB oxide acid on said support is within the range of about 1 to about 2 weight percent based on the total weight of the catalyst.
- 9. A process according to claim 1 wherein said polar diluent of said step (a) is water, said drying of said step (c) is done under vacuum at elevated temperature, and said sulfiding of said step (d) is conducted at a temperature between about 150.degree. C. to about 400.degree. C. with about 1 to about 10 moles sulfur from a sulfur containing compound per mole of said phospho Group VIB metal oxide acid present in said catalyst.
- 10. A process according to claim 3 wherein said moderately acidic aluminum containing support is a metal aluminate, wherein said phospho Group VIB oxide acid is phosphomolybdic acid, wherein said polar diluent of said step (a) is water, and wherein said sulfiding of step (d) is conducted at a temperature between about 150.degree. C. to about 400.degree. C.
- 11. A process according to claim 10 wherein said metal aluminate is zinc aluminate and wherein hydrogen sulfide is employed in said sulfiding of step (d).
