Claims
- 1. Process for producing alumina from bauxite which comprises treating bauxite with an alkali to form a mixture comprising a solution of aluminium-containing ions and precipitating alumina trihydrate from the solution, characterised in that the process comprises treating the solution before or after the precipitation step with a layered double hydroxide in order to remove impurities from the solution by intercalation into the layers in the double hydroxide.
- 2. Process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the double hydroxide comprises layers of formula [LiAl2(OH)6]+.
- 3. Process as claimed in claim 2, wherein the double hydroxide is [LiAl2(OH)6]OH, optionally hydrated.
- 4. Process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the impurities include sulphate, carbonate, oxalate, silicates, phosphate, vanadate, ferrate or mixtures thereof.
- 5. Process as claimed in claim 1, which is the Bayer process.
- 6. Process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the double hydroxide is regenerated at the end of the process by a method comprising treatment with carbonate to form a carbonate intercalate, calcining the carbonate intercalate and hydrating the resulting product.
- 7. Process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the double hydroxide is regenerated at the end of the process by a method which comprises treatment with an acid under conditions which cause protonation and de-intercalation of the intercalated ions whilst leaving the layers of the double hydroxide substantially intact.
- 8. Process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the solution is treated with the double hydroxide at a temperature of from 80 to 100° C.
- 9. Process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the solution is passed through a body of the double hydroxide.
- 10. Process as claimed in claim 9, wherein the body of layered double hydroxide comprises a region of formula [LiAl2(OH)6]OH and, downstream of said region, at least one other region of formula [LiAl2(OH)6]Y, wherein Y is an anion other than OH— whose presence in the solution is beneficial to the process, such that Y— ions pass into the solution on intercalation of the impurities into the layers in the double hydroxide.
- 11. Process as claimed in claim 9, wherein the body of layered double hydroxide comprises a region of formula [LiAl2(OH)6]OH and, downstream of said region, at least one other region of formula [LiAl2(OH)6]Y′, wherein Y′ is an anion which intercalates less strongly into the [LiAl2(OH)6]+layers than OH—, in order that the region of formula [LiAl2(OH)6]Y′ may intercalate any impurities which have not already been intercalated into the region of formula [LiAl2(OH)6]OH.
- 12. Use of a layered double hydroxide in the removal of anionic impurities from Bayer process liquors.
- 13. Use as claimed in claim 12, wherein the double hydroxide comprises layers of formula [LiAl2(OH)6]+.
- 14. Use as claimed in claim 12, wherein the double hydroxide is [LiAl2(OH)6]OH, optionally hydrated.
- 15. Method of producing an aluminium oxide or hydroxide which comprises the precipitation of the oxide or hydroxide from an alkaline solution containing aluminate anions characterised in that the method comprises the step of treating the solution with a layered double hydroxide in order to remove impurities from the solution by intercalation into the layers in the double hydroxide.
- 16. Method as claimed in claim 15, wherein the double hydroxide comprises layers of formula [LiAl2(OH)6]+.
- 17. Method as claimed in claim 16, wherein the double hydroxide is [LiAl2(OH)6]OH, optionally hydrated.
- 18. Process for decolourising alkaline solutions containing aluminate anions in the Bayer process which comprises treating the solution with a layered double hydroxide.
- 19. Process as claimed in claim 18, wherein the layered double hydroxide comprises layers of formula [LiAl2(OH)6]+.
- 20. Process as claimed in claim 19, wherein the double hydroxide is [LiAl2(OH)6]OH, optionally hydrated.
- 21. Process as claimed in claim 18, wherein transition metal-based oxoanions and/or coloured organic anions are removed from the solution.
- 22. Alumina or aluminium hydroxide produced by the process of any one of claims 1 to 10 or the method of claims 15 to 17.
