Claims
- 1. A process for producing a cyclic olefin copolymer having the repeating unit: �X!: ##STR7## wherein R.sup.a is hydrogen or a C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbon group and the repeating unit �Y!: ##STR8## wherein R.sup.b to R.sup.m, which may be the same or different from each other, are each independently hydrogen, a C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbon group or a substituent having a halogen atom, oxygen atom or nitrogen atom; R.sup.j or R.sup.k and R.sup.1 or R.sup.m may form a ring together, and n is 0 or an integer; comprising:
- polymerizing the monomer precursors of said repeating units �X! and �Y! in the presence of a catalyst comprising, as main components, the following compounds (A) and (B):
- (A) a transition metal compound represented by the following formulas (I), (II), or (III),
- CpM.sup.1 R.sup.1 aR.sup.2 bR.sup.3 c (I)
- Cp.sub.2 M.sup.1 R.sup.1 dR.sup.2 e (II)
- (Cp--Af--Cp)M.sup.1 R.sup.1 dR.sup.2 e (III)
- wherein M.sup.1 is a Ti, Zr or Hf atom; Cp is a cyclopentadienyl group, a substituted cyclopentadienyl group, an indenyl group, a substituted indenyl group, a tetrahydroindenyl group, a substituted tetrahydroindenyl group, a fluorenyl group or a substituted fluorenyl group; two Cps in the formula (II) or (III) may be the same as or different from each other; R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently a ligand having a sigma bond, chelate ligand or Lewis base ligand; A is a bridge based on a covalent bond; a, b and c are independently zero or an integer of 1 to 3; d and e are independently zero or an integer of 1 to 2; f is an integer of 1 to 6; two or more of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 or R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 may form a ring; and
- (B) a compound comprising a cation and an anion wherein a plurality of functional groups are connected to an element.
- 2. The process according to claim 1, wherein Cp in formula (I) to (III) is a cyclopentadienyl group or substituted cyclopentadienyl group.
- 3. The process according to claim 1, wherein compound (B) is composed of a cation comprising an element selected from the group consisting of Groups IIIB, IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB, VIII, IA, IB, IIA, IIB and VIIA of the Periodic Table; and an anion wherein a plurality of functional groups are connected to an element selected from the group consisting of Groups of VB, VIB, VIIB, VIII, IB, IIB, IIIA, IVA and VA of the Periodic Table.
- 4. The process according to claim 1, wherein said catalyst further comprises (C) an organoaluminum compound.
- 5. The process according to claim 1, wherein R.sup.a in the repeating unit �X! is hydrogen, R.sup.b to R.sup.e in the repeating unit �Y! are each independently hydrogen and n in the repeating unit �Y! is 0.
- 6. The process according to claim 1, wherein the cyclic olefin copolymer contains from 0.1 to 20 mol % of repeating unit (Y) and 80 to 99.9 mol % of repeating unit (X).
- 7. The process of claim 1, wherein said cyclopentadienyl transition metal compound has formula (I):
- CpM.sup.1 R.sup.1.sub.a R.sup.2.sub.b R.sup.3.sub.c,
- and Cp, M.sup.1 and R.sup.1 to R.sup.3 are as defined above.
- 8. The process of claim 1, wherein said cyclopentadienyl transition metal compound has formula (II):
- Cp.sub.2 M.sup.1 R.sup.1.sub.d R.sup.2.sub.e,
- and Cp, M.sup.1, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are as defined above.
- 9. The process of claim 1, wherein said cyclopentadienyl transition metal compound has formula (III):
- (Cp--Af--Cp)M.sup.1 R.sup.1.sub.d R.sup.2.sub.e,
- and Cp, A, M.sup.1, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are as defined above.
- 10. The process of claim 1, wherein said transition metal compound (A) has the formula: (CP--A--Cp)M.sup.1 R.sup.1 dR.sup.2 e, wherein Cp, M.sup.1, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are as defined above and A is methylene, dimethylmethylene, ethylene, 1,1'-cyclohexylene, dimethylsilylene, dimethylgermylene or dimethylstannylene.
- 11. The process of claim 1, wherein the value of f is one.
