- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the alkyd resin is a short-oil alkyd resin, a medium-oil alkyd resin, a long-oil alkyd resin, a phenolic resin-modified alkyd resin, an epoxy-modified alkyd resin or an oil-free alkyd resin.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the vinyl monomer comprises an N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl (meth)acrylate, an N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl (meth)acrylamide, (meth)acrylamide, N-methylol (meth)acrylamide, an N,N-dialkyl (meth)acrylamide, diacetone (meth)acrylamide, N-vinylmorpholine, an N-alkoxymethyl (meth)acrylamide, N-vinylpyrrolidone, acrylonitrile, an N,N-dialkylaminoalkylmaleimide or vinylimidazole.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the vinyl monomer comprises a compound represented by the general formula ##STR3## wherein R.sup.1 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 each represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an alkyl ether group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms, an aryl group having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, or an aralkyl group having 7 to 14 carbon atoms, and A represents an alkylene group having 1 to 14 carbon atoms or a C.sub.2 -C.sub.14 alkylene group having at least one ether linkage.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the amount of said at least one vinyl monomer selected from the group consisting of nitrogen-containing vinyl monomers and phosphorus-containing vinyl monomers is from 0.05 to 3% by weight, based on the weight of the alkyd resin, and the amount of said at least one vinyl monomer other than said nitrogen- and phosphorus-containing vinyl monomers is not more than 3.0% by weight of said alkyd resin.
- 6. The process of claim 1 which comprises graft-copolymerizing said alkyd resin with 0.01 to 5.0% by weight of a mixture of a nitrogen-containing vinyl monomer and a phosphrous-containing vinyl monomer.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein the nitrogen-containing vinyl monomer is N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl (meth)acrylate, N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl (meth)acrylamide, (meth)acrylamide, N-methylol (meth)acrylamide, N,N-dialkyl (meth)acrylamide, diacetone (meth)acrylamide, N-vinylmorpholine, N-alkoxymethyl (meth)acrylamide, N-vinylpyrrolidone, N,N-dialkylaminoalkylmaleimide and vinylimidazole and wherein the phosphorus-containing vinyl monomer is a compound represented by the general formula ##STR4## wherein R.sup.1 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 each represent atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an alkyl either group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms, an aryl group having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, or an aralkyl group having 7 to 14 carbon atoms, and A represents an alkylene group having 1 to 14 carbon atoms or a C.sub.2 -C.sub.14 alkylene group having at least one ether linkage.
- 8. The process of claim 7 wherein the total amount of the nitrogen-containing vinyl monomer and phosphorus-containing vinyl monomer is from 0.05 to 3% by weight based on said alkyd resin.
- 9. The process of claim 1 wherein the alkyd resin has site of unsaturation originating from an oil or fat and which is the site of graft-copolymerization with the nitrogen-containing vinyl monomer, the phosphorus-containing vinyl monomer, or both.
- 10. The process of claim 1 which comprises reacting an alkyd resin having hydroxyl groups with an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or dicarboxylic acid anhydride to introduce sites of unsaturation in the alkyd resin and graft-copolymerizing the resulting alkyd resin with the at least one nitrogen-containing vinyl monomer, phosphorus-containing vinyl monomer, or mixture thereof.
