Claims
- 1. A process for the production of a three-dimensional polymeric fiber mass formed of crystalline, branched polymeric fibers and fiber bundles randomly arranged in all directions to define a coherent mass having isotropic properties comprising dissolving a fiber-forming polymeric material in a solvent, and cooling resultant solution while subjecting said solution to the application of sonic vibrations.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said solvent is a nonpolymerizable solvent.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein said solvent is a polymerizable solvent.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein said solvent is styrene and said fiber forming material is isotactic polypropylene.
- 5. The process of claim 3 wherein said solvent is a mixture of styrene and methylmethacrylate and said fiber forming material is isotactic polypropylene.
- 6. The process of claim 3 wherein said solvent is a mixture of styrene, methylmethacrylate and acrylonitrile and said fiber forming material is isotactic polypropylene.
- 7. The process of claim 3 wherein the resultant solution contains a crosslinking agent for the polymerizable solvent.
- 8. The process of claim 7 wherein the fiber-forming polymeric material is a polyalkene.
- 9. A method for the production of a composite material comprising:
- (a) dissolving a fiber-forming material in a polymerizable solvent,
- (b) subjecting the resultant solution to the application of sonic vibrations, and cooling said agitated solution whereby a three-dimensional fibrous mass consisting essentially of crystalline, branched fibers and fiber bundles randomly arranged in all directions to define a coherent mass having isotropic properties is formed, and
- (c) curing said fiber-containing solvent.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein said fiber-forming material is polyethylene, isotactic polypropylene, polyethylene oxide, isotactic poly-4-methylpentene-1, isotactic poly(butene-1), nylon or mixtures thereof.
- 11. The method of claim 9 wherein said fiber-forming material is a polyalkene.
- 12. The process of claim 1 wherein the sonic vibrations have frequencies ranging from about 80 to 2000 Hz.
- 13. A method for the production of a composite material comprising:
- (a) impregnation of a fiber mass consisting essentially of crystalline, branched polymeric fibers and fiber bundles, said fibers and fiber bundles being branched and being structurally integral each with the other at their points of branching so that the fibers and fiber bundles are randomly arranged in all directions to define a coherent mass having isotropic properties with a polymerizable liquid, and
- (b) curing said liquid.

This is a divisional application of pending prior application Ser. No. 616,747 filed on Sept. 9, 1975, now abandoned, which is itself a continuation of prior application Ser. No. 481,412 filed on June 20, 1974, which is now abandoned.
