Claims
- 1. A process for forming norsolanadione comprising the steps of reacting a compound having the structure: ##STR168## with acetone in the presence of base to form at least one compound defined according to the structure: ##STR169## wherein one of the dashed lines is a carbon-carbon double bond and the other of the dashed lines is a carbon-carbon single bond; reacting one of the compounds having the structure: ##STR170## with an alkylene glycol having the structure: ##STR171## to form a ketal having the structure: ##STR172## wherein R represents hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl and one of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon double bond and the other of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon single bond; reacting at least one of the ketals having the structure: ##STR173## with methyl lithium in order to form the organometallic compound having the structure: ##STR174## reacting the organometallic compound having the structure: ##STR175## with aqueous acid in order to form the norsolanadione having a structure defined according to the genus: ##STR176## wherein the dashed lines are as defined above.
