Claims
- 1. A process for making a compound of Formula I ##STR3## wherein R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are independently selected from C.sub.1-8 alkyl, substituted aryl, unsubstituted aryl and aralkyl having from 6 to 12 carbon atoms in total, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are selected from the same values as R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 and hydrogen, and R.sub.5 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-6 alkyl from a nitrile of formula H.sub.2 C =C(R.sup.5)CN where R.sup.5 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-6 alkyl and a sulphonating agent characterized in that the process comprises reacting below 20.degree. C. a compound of Formula II ##STR4## with the sulphonating agent in the substantial absence of water and with the nitrile and hydrolyzing the product by reaction 30.degree. C. with added water to produce the compound of Formula I wherein R.sup.6 selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, alkoxy, acyloxy, halogen, sulphate, aryloxy and aralkoxy.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 comprising mixing the compound of Formula II with the sulphonating agent in the absence of water and at a low temperature that is below 20.degree. C. and then adding the nitrile and water and reacting the mixture to an elevated temperature of above 30.degree. C.
- 3. A process according to claim 2 in which the low temperature is a temperature of -15.degree. C. to 0.degree. C. at which the mixture is liquid and the elevated temperature is 60.degree. to 90.degree. C.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 in which the sulphonating agent is selected from oleum and acetyl sulphate.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 in which the sulphonating agent is 50 to 80% oleum.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 in which R.sup.6 is hydroxy, C.sub.1-8 alkoxy or C.sub.1-8 acyloxy.
- 7. A process according to claim 1 in which R.sup.6 is hydroxy, methoxy or acetoxy.
