Claims
- 1. A process for separating a minor proportion of ammonia from a hydrocarbon having a kinetic diameter of not more than about 5 .ANG., which process comprises contacting a feedstream comprising ammonia and the hydrocarbon with clinoptilolite that has been subjected to ion-exchange with at least one metal cation of the group consisting of lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, barium and strontium, zinc, copper, cobalt, iron and manganese cations to an extent sufficient to cause the ammonia to be selectively adsorbed into the clinoptilolite and withdrawing a product stream at least partially depleted in ammonia relative to the feedstream.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the clinoptilolite is a natural clinoptilolite.
- 3. A process according to claim 1 wherein the metal cation is at least one of lithium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, barium and strontium cations.
- 4. A process according to claim 3 wherein the metal cation is sodium.
- 5. A process according to claim 4 wherein the clinoptilolite is ion-exchanged to the extent that at least about 60% of the total cations in the clinoptilolite are exchanged with sodium cations.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 wherein said contacting is conducted at a temperature in the range of from -15.degree. to +60.degree. C.
- 7. A process according to claim 1 wherein the ammonia content of the hydrocarbon is not greater than about 200 parts per million.
- 8. A process according to claim 1 wherein the partial pressure of ammonia in the feedstream is not greater than about 20 Torr.
- 9. A process according to claim 1, wherein the hydrocarbon is an acyclic hydrocarbon containing not more than 5 carbon atoms.
- 10. A process according to claim 9, wherein the hydrocarbon is an acyclic hydrocarbon containing not more than 4 carbon atoms.
- 11. A process according to claim 10 wherein the hydrocarbon is selected from the group consisting of methane, ethylene, ethane, propylene, propane, a butane and a butene.
- 12. A process according to claim 11 wherein the hydrocarbon is selected from the group consisting of ethylene, ethane, propylene and propane.
- 13. A process according to claim 12 wherein the hydrocarbon consists of ethylene.
- 14. A process according to claim 13 wherein the clinoptilolite is a sodium clinoptilolite.
- 15. A process according to claim 1 wherein, after ammonia has been adsorbed into the clinoptilolite, a purge gas having a temperature of at least about 50.degree. C. is passed through the clinoptilolite, thereby causing desorption of the ammonia from the clinoptilolite.
- 16. A process according to claim 15 wherein the inert gas is nitrogen or methane.
- 17. A cyclic adsorption process for separating ammonia from hydrocarbons having molecules with a kinetic diameter of less than about 5 .ANG., which process comprises:
- (a) passing a feedstream comprising ammonia and the hydrocarbon to an adsorber bed containing a clinoptilolite molecular sieve that has been subjected to ion-exchange with at least one metal cation of the group consisting of lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, barium and strontium cations, at conditions effective to cause the ammonia to be selectively adsorbed on said clinoptilolite, said conditions selected from a temperature of from about -50.degree. to 100.degree. C. and at a pressure of from about 0.2 to 1500 psia and withdrawing an effluent stream having a reduced amount of ammonia relative to the feed stream, and;
- (b) regenerating said adsorber bed by desorbing ammonia therefrom by passing an inert gas having a temperature higher than the adsorption temperature and at least about 50.degree. C. therethrough.
- 18. A process according to claim 17 wherein the inert gas is nitrogen or methane.
