Claims
- 1. A process for bleaching Kraft wood pulp comprising subjecting the wood pulp after a brown stock washing stage to the following steps:
- oxygen delignifying said wood pulp in the presence of oxygen and base followed by at least one post oxygen washing stage to form oxygen delignified pulp;
- subjecting the oxygen delignified pulp to an acid treatment to substantially remove non-process metals to form treated pulp, and washing the treated pulp with water to form washed treated pulp;
- bleaching the washed treated pulp in a first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage to form a first bleached pulp;
- neutralizing said first bleached pulp in a neutralization stage to form a neutralized pulp;
- subjecting the neutralized pulp to an extraction stage in the presence of base to form extracted pulp;
- washing the extracted pulp from said extraction stage with water on at least one post extraction washing stage to form wash extracted pulp;
- subjecting said washed extracted pulp to one or more final chlorine dioxide bleaching stages and washing pulp after at least one of said final chlorine dioxide bleaching stages;
- discharging the filtrate from said washing after said at least one of said final chlorine dioxide bleaching stages, recycling counter currently all or a portion of said filtrate from said washing after said at least one of said final chloride dioxide bleaching stages to said extraction stage as wash water or a combination thereof;
- recycling counter currently all or a portion of the filtrate from said at least one post extraction washing stage to neutralize said first bleached pulp from said first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage in said neutralization stage prior to subjecting said first bleached pulp to said extraction stage such that all or a portion of filtrate from the extraction stage and all or a portion of filtrate from the first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage are combined with said first bleached pulp to form a mixture comprising said first bleached pulp and a combined filtrate comprising all or a portion of the filtrate from the extraction stage and all or a portion of the filtrate from the first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage;
- separating all or a portion of the combined filtrate from the first bleached pulp and recycling at least a portion of the separated combined filtrate to said at least one post oxygen washing stage as wash water;
- recovering filtrate from at least one post oxygen washing stage in the cooking liquor recovery process by recycling said filtrate counter currently through the brownstock washing stage constituting a weak black liquor which is evaporated to produce a strong black liquor;
- combusting said strong black liquor in a recovery boiler to produce a smelt and a flue gas such that chloride from the counter currently recycled filtrates from one or more of the chlorine dioxide bleaching stages is enriched in the flue gas from combustion;
- collecting particles containing potassium, chloride and sulfate salts in said flue gas as ash;
- removing chloride and potassium salts from said ash to produce a solid stream containing sulfate salts and a stream containing chloride and potassium salts;
- discharging the stream containing chloride and potassium salts;
- mixing said stream containing sulfate salts with said strong black liquor prior to combustion of said liquor in said recovery boiler; and
- dissolving said recovery boiler smelt in water to form green liquor and converting the green liquor to pulping liquor in the causticizing process.
- 2. A process as defined in claim 1 wherein said extraction stage is carried out and in the presence of oxygen, peroxide or a combination of oxygen and peroxide.
- 3. A process as defined in claim 2 wherein:
- the consistency of said wash treated pulp during said first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage is from about 9% to about 14%; and
- the first bleached pulp from said first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage is neutralized to a pH of from about 5 to about 7 in said neutralizing stage.
- 4. A process as defined in claim 3 wherein all or a portion of filtrates from one or more of said at least one final chlorine dioxide bleaching stages are recovered by introducing fresh water only in the washing after the last final chlorine dioxide bleaching stage and counter currently recycling filtrate from each final preceding chlorine dioxide bleach stage to each succeeding final chlorine dioxide bleach stage as wash water and continuing this countercurrent recycling of said final chloride dioxide bleaching stage filtrates as wash water sequentially to said at least one post extraction washing stage, said at least one post oxygen washing stage and a brownstock washing stage.
- 5. A process as defined in claim 2 wherein the consistency of said wash treated pulp during said first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage is from about 2% to about 5%.
- 6. A process as defined in claim 5 wherein all or a portion of filtrates from one or more of said final chlorine dioxide bleaching stages are recovered by introducing fresh water only in the washing after the final chlorine dioxide bleaching stage and counter currently recycling filtrate from each preceding final chlorine dioxide bleach stage to each succeeding final chloride dioxide bleach stage as wash water and continuing this countercurrent recycling of said final chlorine dioxide bleaching stage filtrates as wash water sequentially to said at least post extraction washing stage, said at least one post oxygen washing stage and a brownstock washing stage.
- 7. A process as defined in claim 2 wherein said chlorine dioxide bleaching stage is carried out with bleach which a chlorine dioxide based comprises at least about 90% by weight of chlorine dioxide as the bleaching agent.
- 8. A process as defined in claim 7 wherein said chlorine dioxide based bleach comprises at least about 95% by weight of chlorine dioxide as the bleaching agent.
- 9. A process as defined in claim 8 wherein said chlorine dioxide based bleach comprises substantially 100% chlorine dioxide as the bleaching agent.
- 10. A process as defined in claim 1 wherein removing said chloride and potassium salts from said ash comprises:
- leaching said ash with water to produce a solid containing sulfate salts and a solution containing chloride and potassium salts, or dissolving said ash in water to form a solution comprising chloride, potassium and sulfate salts and crystallizing said sulfate salts from the solution thereof to produce a solid containing sodium sulfate and a solution containing chloride and potassium salts, or a combination thereof.
- 11. A process for bleaching Kraft wood pulp comprising subjecting the wood pulp after brown stock washing stage to the following steps:
- oxygen delignifying said wood pulp in the presence of oxygen and base followed by at least one post oxygen washing stage to form oxygen delignified pulp;
- bleaching the oxygen delignified pulp in a first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage to form first bleached pulp;
- thickening said first bleached pulp from said first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage by separating all or a portion of the first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage filtrate from said first bleached pulp to form separated first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage filtrate and thickened pulp;
- extracting said thickened pulp in an extraction stage in the presence of base to form extracted pulp;
- washing said extracted pulp on at least one post extraction washing stage to form washed extracted pulp;
- bleaching said washed extracted pulp in one or more final chlorine dioxide bleaching stages and washing pulp after at least one of said final chlorine dioxide bleaching stages to form a washed bleached pulp;
- discharging the filtrate from said washings after said at least one final chlorine dioxide bleaching stages, recycling all or a portion of said filtrate from said washings after said at least one final chlorine dioxide bleaching stages to said extraction stage as wash water or a combination thereof;
- treating all or a portion of said separated first chlorine dioxide bleach stage filtrate from said thickening stage to remove all or a portion of non-process metals that enter the process with the wood fiber to form a treated filtrate having reduced nonprocess metal content and using all or a portion of the treated filtrate to wash first bleached pulp from the first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage to reduce or prevent the carryover of metals to the extraction stage whereby all or a portion of dissolved solids entering or generated in the first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage pass to the extraction stage with the thickened pulp;
- recycling filtrate from said at least one post extraction washing stage, which filtrate comprises all or a portion of the solids generated in the extraction stage and all or a portion of the solids entering the extraction stage from the first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage, as wash water to counter currently wash pulp beginning with said at least one post oxygen washing stage and continuing through a brownstock washing stage which constitutes a weak black liquor;
- evaporating said weak black liquor to produce a strong black liquor;
- combusting said strong black liquor in a recovery boiler to produce a smelt and a flue gas whereby chloride from the counter currently recycled filtrate from one or more of the chlorine dioxide bleaching stages is enriched in the flue gas from combustion;
- collecting particles containing potassium, chloride and sulfate salts in said flue gas as ash;
- removing chloride and potassium salts from said ash to produce a solid stream containing sulfate salts and a stream containing chloride and potassium salts;
- discharging the stream containing chloride and potassium salts;
- mixing said solid stream containing sulfate salts with said strong black liquor prior to combustion of said liquor in said recovery boiler; and
- dissolving said recovery boiler smelt in water to form green liquor and converting the green liquor to pulping liquor in the causticizing process.
- 12. A process as defined in claim 11 wherein all or a portion of filtrates from one or more of said final chloride dioxide bleaching stages are recovered by introducing fresh water only in the washing after the last of said final chlorine dioxide bleaching stages and counter currently recycling filtrate from each preceding final chlorine dioxide bleach stage to each succeeding final chlorine dioxide bleach stage as wash water and continuing this countercurrent recycling of said final chlorine dioxide bleaching stage filtrates as wash water sequentially to said at least one post extraction washing stage, said at least one post oxygen washing stage and a brownstock washing stage.
- 13. A process as defined in claim 11 wherein green liquor is used to effect the metal precipitation from the first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage.
- 14. A process as defined in claim 11 wherein green liquor is used to effect the metal precipitation from the first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage.
- 15. A process as defined in claim 11 wherein a combination of green liquor, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate is used to effect the metal precipitation.
- 16. A process as defined in claim 11 wherein a combination of green liquor, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate is used to effect the metal precipitation.
- 17. A process as defined in claim 11 wherein the metal precipitate is mixed with said strong black liquor before combustion or added to green liquor for removing metals with grits and dregs.
- 18. A process as defined in claim 11 wherein the metal precipitate is mixed with said strong black liquor before combustion or added to green liquor for removing metals with grits and dregs.
- 19. A process as defined in claim 13 wherein the metal precipitate is mixed with said strong black liquor before combustion or added to green liquor for removing metals with grits and dregs.
- 20. A process as defined in claim 15 wherein the metal precipitate is mixed with said strong black liquor before combustion or added to green liquor for removing metals with grits and dregs.
- 21. A process as defined in claim 11 wherein said extraction stage is carried out in the presence of oxygen, peroxide or a combination of oxygen and peroxide.
- 22. A process as defined in claim 11 wherein the consistency of said pulp during said first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage is from about 2% to about 5%.
- 23. A process as defined in claim 22 wherein all or a portion of filtrates from one or more of said final chlorine dioxide bleaching stages are recovered by introducing fresh water only in the washing after the last of said final chlorine dioxide bleaching stages and counter currently recycling filtrate from each preceding final chlorine dioxide bleaching stage to each final succeeding chlorine dioxide bleach stage as wash water and continuing this countercurrent recycle of said final chlorine dioxide bleaching stage filtrates as wash water sequentially to said at least one post extraction washing stage, said at least one post oxygen washing stage and a brownstock washing stage.
- 24. A process as defined in claim 23 wherein green liquor is used to effect the metal precipitation from the first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage.
- 25. A process as defined in claim 23 wherein a combination of green liquor, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate is used to effect the metal precipitation.
- 26. A process as defined in claim 23 wherein the metal precipitate is mixed with said strong black liquor before combustion or added to green liquor for removing metals with grits and dregs.
- 27. A process as defined in claim 11 wherein the consistency of said pulp in said first chlorine dioxide bleaching stage is from about 9% to about 14%.
- 28. A process as defined in claim 11 which comprises:
- treating all or a portion of said filtrate from said first chlorine dioxide stage with base to effect precipitation of all or a portion of non-process metals entering the process with the wood pulp to from precipitation material in an aqueous filtrate;
- separating all or a portion of the precipitated material from the aqueous filtrate and
- discharging said material and recycling the filtrate.
- 29. A process as defined in claim 28 wherein said base comprises alkali metal hydroxide.
- 30. A process is defined in claim 29 wherein said base comprises sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate.
- 31. A process as defined in claim 28 wherein said precipitated material and said aqueous filtrate are separated by gravity settling, filtration or a combination thereof.
- 32. A process as defined in claim 11 wherein said chlorine dioxide based bleaching stage is carried out with a chlorine dioxide based bleach which comprises at least about 90% by weight of chlorine dioxide as the bleaching agent.
- 33. A process as defined in claim 32 wherein said chlorine based bleach comprises at least about 95% by weight of chlorine dioxide as the bleaching agent.
- 34. A process as defined in claim 33 wherein said chlorine based bleach comprises substantially 100% chlorine dioxide as the bleaching agent.
- 35. Process of claim 11 which further comprises:
- combining all or a portion of said filtrate from said first acidic bleaching stage and all or a portion of said filtrate from said extraction stage to form a combined filtrate;
- recycling counter currently all or a portion of said combined filtrate to said at least one post oxygen washing stage as wash water.
- 36. A process for bleaching Kraft wood pulp comprising subjecting the wood pulp after brown stock washing to the following steps:
- an oxygen delignification stage to form oxygen delignified pulp;
- at least one post oxygen delignification washing stage to form washed oxygen delignified pulp;
- a first acidic bleaching stage to form a first bleached pulp;
- a neutralization stage to form a neutralized pulp;
- an extraction stage to form an extracted pulp; and
- at least one post extraction washing stage washing stage to remove all or a portion of the bleach solids to form a washed extracted pulp; and said process further comprising;
- subjecting said washed oxygen delignified pulp to an acid wash after said at least one post oxygen delignification washing stage and prior to said first acidic bleaching stage in which all or a portion of non-process metals contained in said washed oxygen delignified pulp are removed from said washed oxygen delignified pulp prior to the extraction stage whereby carryover of non-process metals entering the process with the wood pulp to the extraction stage is reduced;
- recycling all or a portion of the first acidic bleaching stage filtrate and all or a portion of the extraction stage filtrate counter currently through said at least one post oxygen delignification washing stage and the brown stock washing which constitutes a weak black liquor;
- recycling said weak black liquor to a black liquor evaporation stage to produce a strong black liquor;
- combusting said strong black liquor to produce a smelt stream and a flue gas comprising particulates which comprise chlorides and sulfates and separating said smelt stream and said flue gas;
- treating said flue gas to separate said particulates as ash, and treating said ash to form a component relatively low in chlorides and relatively rich in sulfates and a component relatively rich in chlorides and relatively low in sulfates; and
- recycling said component relatively low in chlorides and relatively rich in sulfates to said strong black liquor and discharging said component relatively rich in chlorides and relatively low in sulfates; and
- recycling said smelt to a causticizing stage to regenerate pulping liquor.
- 37. Process of claim 36 wherein said acidic bleaching stages comprises bleaching with chlorine dioxide which may comprise elemental chlorine; and wherein said oxidative extraction stage is carried out in the presence of an effective amount of hydrogen peroxide.
- 38. Process of claim 37, wherein said chlorine dioxide comprises no or substantially no elemental chlorine.
- 39. Process of claim 36 which further comprises at least one additional acidic bleaching stage after said washing stage.
- 40. Process of claim 39 which further comprises recycling countercurrently through said washing sequence and said brown stock washing all or substantially all filtrates from said first acidic bleaching stage; from said partial neutralization; from said oxidative extraction stage; from said washing stage to remove bleach solids; and from said at least one additional acidic bleaching stage.
- 41. Process of claim 36 comprising recycling counter currently all or a portion of the filtrate from said at least one post extraction washing stage, after said extraction stage, to partially neutralize pulp from said first acidic bleaching stage in said partial neutralization prior to said extraction stage such that all or a portion of filtrate from the extraction stage and all or a portion of filtrate from the first acidic bleaching stage are combined with said pulp from said first acidic bleaching stage to form a mixture comprising said pulp and a combined filtrate; and
- separating all or a portion of the combined filtrate from the pulp and recycling at least a portion of the separated combined filtrate to said washing sequence as wash water.
- 42. Process of claim 36 wherein said extraction stage is carried out in the presence of oxygen, peroxide or a combination of oxygen and peroxide.
- 43. A process for bleaching Kraft wood pulp comprising subjecting the wood pulp after brown stock washing to the following steps:
- an oxygen delignification stage to form oxygen delignified pulp;
- at least one post oxygen delignification washing stage to form washed oxygen delignified pulp;
- a first acidic bleaching stage to form a first bleached pulp;
- an extraction stage to form extracted pulp; and
- at least one post extraction washing stage to remove all or a portion of the bleach solids to form washed extracted pulp; and said process further comprising:
- separating all or a portion of a first acidic bleaching stage filtrate from said first bleached pulp prior to said extraction stage to form a separated first acidic bleaching stage filtrate comprising all or a portion of the non-process metals entering the process with the wood pulp and a first bleached pulp such that all or a portion of said non-process metals are removed from said first bleached pulp prior to the extraction stage whereby carryover of said non-process metals to the extraction stage is reduced;
- treating all or a portion of the separated first acidic bleaching stage filtrate to remove all or a portion of non-process metals from said filtrate to form treated filtrate; and using all or a portion of said treated first acidic bleaching stage filtrate (i) as wash water in said at least one post oxygen delignification washing stage or (ii) as wash water in said at least one post extraction washing stage or (iii) as wash water to wash the first bleached pulp after the first acidic bleaching stage and before the extraction stage or (iv) a combination thereof,
- recycling all or a portion of an extraction stage filtrate which comprises all or a portion of solids entering or generated in the extraction stage and all or a portion of the solids entering into or generated in the first acidic bleaching stage counter currently through the at least one post oxygen delignification washing stage and the brown stock washing which constitutes a weak black liquor;
- recycling said weak black liquor to a black liquor evaporation stage to produce a strong black liquor; combusting said strong black liquor to produce a smelt stream and a flue gas comprising particulates which comprise chlorides and sulfates and separating said smelt stream and said flue gas;
- treating said flue gas to separate said particulates as ash and treating said ash to form a component relatively rich in chlorides and relatively low in sulfates and a component relatively low in chlorides and relatively rich in sulfates; and
- recycling said component relatively low in chlorides and relatively rich in sulfates to said strong black liquor and discharging said component relatively rich in chlorides and relatively low in sulfates; and
- recycling said smelt to a causticizing stage to regenerate pulping liquor.
- 44. Process of claim 43 wherein said first acidic bleaching stage comprises bleaching with chlorine dioxide which may comprise elemental chlorine and wherein said extraction stage is carried out in the presence of an effective amount of hydrogen peroxide.
- 45. Process of claim which 43 further comprises at least one additional acidic bleaching stage after said washing stage.
- 46. Process of claim 44, wherein said chlorine dioxide comprises no or substantially no elemental chlorine.
- 47. Process of claim 45, which further comprises recycling countercurrently through said at least one post oxygen delignification washing stage and said brown stock all or a portion of said filtrates from said at least one additional acidic bleaching stage, discharging all or a portion of said filtrates from said at least one additional acidic bleaching stage or a combination thereof.
- 48. Process of claims 43 which further comprises:
- combining all or a portion of said filtrate from said first acidic bleaching stage and all or a portion of said filtrate from said extraction stage to form a combined filtrate;
- recycling counter currently all or a portion of said combined filtrate to said washing sequence as wash water.
- 49. Process of claim 43 wherein said extraction stage is carried out in the presence of oxygen, peroxide or a combination of oxygen and peroxide.
