Claims
- 1. A process for removing H2S from a gaseous stream, by the steps of:
(a) flowing the gaseous stream through an absorber vessel whereat said stream is contacted with a sorbing liquor comprising a nonaqueous solvent containing dissolved sulfur, a base consisting essentially of a tertiary amine having sufficient strength and concentration to drive the reaction between H2S sorbed by said liquor and said dissolved sulfur to form a nonvolatile polysulfide which is soluble in the sorbing liquor, and a solubilizing agent for maintaining the solubility of polysulfide intermediates which may otherwise separate during the process; (b) converting the dissolved nonvolatile polysulfide in said sorbing liquor to sulfur which remains dissolved in said liquor by contacting the liquor with an oxidizing gas comprising sulfur dioxide; (c) cooling said sorbing liquor following said oxidation of said polysulfide to a temperature at which the liquor is at or above saturation with respect to said dissolved sulfur; (d) converting at least part of the dissolved sulfur in the liquor from step (c) to solid particulate sulfur at a point downstream of the absorber vessel; and (e) separating said solid sulfur from step (d) from the liquor.
- 2. A process in accordance with claim 1, in which step (d) is at least partially conducted in a crystallizer tank and wherein the sorbing liquor in step (c) is cooled in a heat exchanger—containing cooling loop which cooperates with said crystallizer tank.
- 3. A process in accordance with claim 3 in which the sorbing liquor cooled in step (c) has an initial temperature of up to 85° C.
- 4. A process in accordance with claim 3 wherein the liquor is cooled in step (c) by from 5° to 60° C.
- 5. A process in accordance with claim 4, wherein the cooling loop includes a heat exchanger wherein the cooling surfaces contacting the liquor being cooled comprises a polymer which resists adherence of sulfur particles which form or are present in the flow of liquor through the heat exchanger.
- 6. A process in accordance with claim 5, wherein the sorbing liquor from step (b) is pumped into the cooling loop upstream of said heat exchanger and the cooled flow from said heat exchanger is pumped to said crystallizer tank.
- 7. A process in accordance with claim 6, wherein said crystallizer tank includes a lower settling zone for a slurry of precipitated sulfur particles, and an upper clear zone containing substantially clear sorbing liquor.
- 8. A process in accordance with claim 7, wherein clear liquor taken from said upper zone of said crystallizer tank is merged at the cooling loop with the liquor from step (b) to partially cool the liquor from step (b) upstream of said heat exchanger.
- 9. A process in accordance with claim 8, wherein the output flow from said heat exchanger is substantially clear, but supersaturated with respect to dissolved sulfur, and said flow is returned to the settling zone of said crystallizer tank where it is seeded by sulfur particles to effect precipitation of further sulfur.
- 10. A process in accordance with claim 9, wherein step (e) is performed by filtering sulfur slurry taken from the lower settling zone of said crystallizer tank.
- 11. A process in accordance with claim 10, wherein the liquor passing through said heat exchanger is cooled thereat by from 5 to 20° C.
- 12. A process in accordance with claim 11, wherein the volume of said clear liquor from said crystallizer tank which is merged at the cooling loop with the liquor from step (b) is greater than the merged volume of liquor from step (b)
- 13. A process in accordance with claim 1, wherein said sorbing liquor is cooled in step (c) by being pumped through a cooling loop while substantially clear, the cooling in said loop bringing said liquor to a condition of supersaturation with respect to said dissolved sulfur; and wherein the resulting supersaturated clear liquor is taken from said cooling loop and seeded with sulfur crystals to effect step (d).
- 14. A process in accordance with claim 13, wherein said pumping of said clear liquor through said cooling loop is effected with a centrifugal pump.
- 15. A process in accordance with claim 13, wherein step (d) is conducted at a zone in a crystallizer tank where said sulfur seeding crystals are present.
