Claims
- 1. A process for preparing an activated carbon catalyst for catalytically oxidizing tertiary amines and secondary amines in the presence of oxygen or an oxygen containing gas to selectively produce secondary amines and primary amines which comprises pyrolyzing activated carbon at a temperature in the range of about 800.degree. C. to about 1200.degree. C. while simultaneously passing over the activated carbon a gas stream comprised of an oxygen-containing gas and NH.sub.3 wherein the oxygen-containing gas/NH.sub.3 is in a ratio of up to 90:10 for a time sufficient to remove surface oxides from the carbon.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the oxygen-containing gas is selected from the group consisting of H.sub.2 O, NO.sub.x, O.sub.2, CO.sub.2, SO.sub.2 and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the oxygen-containing gas stream is NH.sub.3 /H.sub.2 O.
