Claims
- 1. In a process for the catalytic conversion of exhaust gases emanating from internal combustion engines, the improvement which comprises, as the catalyst therefor, a cerium/zirconium mixed oxide obtained by thermohydrolysis and which present a pure monophasic CeO.sub.2 cubic crystalline habit wherein zirconium is incorporated in the crystalline habit of the cerium oxide, the cerium/zirconium mixed oxide having a specific surface area of at least 20 m.sub.2 /g when heated to 900.degree. C.
- 2. The process as defined in claim 1, wherein the specific surface area is at least 30 m.sup.2 /g after calcination at 800.degree. C. for 6 hours.
- 3. The process as defined in claim 1, wherein the cerium/zirconium mixed oxide has the formula Ce.sub.x Zr.sub.1-x O.sub.2, in which x is a number ranging from 0.5 to less than 1 and the specific surface area is at least 50 m.sup.2 /g when heated at 800.degree. C. for six hours.
- 4. The process as defined in claim 1, wherein the cerium/zirconium mixed oxide has the formula Ce.sub.x Zr.sub.1-x O.sub.2 in which x is greater than 0.5 and less than 1, the specific surface area being at least 50 m.sup.2 /g after heating at 800.degree. C. for six hours.
- 5. The process as defined in claims 1, wherein the cerium/zirconium mixed oxide has the formula Ce.sub.x Zr.sub.1-x O.sub.2 in which x is a number ranging from 0.5 to 0.8 and the specific surface area is at least 30 m.sup.2 /g after calcination at 800.degree. C. for 6 hours.
- 6. The process as defined in claim 1, wherein the cerium/zirconium mixed oxide after heating at a temperature between 400.degree. and 800.degree. C., has the formula Ce.sub.x Zr.sub.1-x O.sub.2, in which x is a number ranging from 0.5 to less than 1.
- 7. The process as defined in claim 1, wherein the specific surface area is at least 30 m.sup.2 /g after calcination at 800.degree. C. for 6 hours.
- 8. The process as defined in claim 1, wherein the specific surface area is at least 40 m.sup.2 /g after calcination at 800.degree. C. for 6 hours.
- 9. The process as defined in claim 1, wherein the specific surface area is at least 50 m.sup.2 /g after calcination at 800.degree. C. for 6 hours.
- 10. The process as defined in claim 1, wherein the a specific surface area is at least 20 m.sup.2 /g after calcination at 900.degree. C. for 6 hours.
- 11. The process as defined in claim 1, wherein the specific surface area is at least 30 m.sup.2 /g after calcination at 900.degree. C. for 6 hours.
- 12. The process as defined in claim 1, wherein the cerium/zirconium mixed oxide is admixed with precious metals and comprises beads or a lining of a refractory body during the catalytic conversion process.
