Claims
- 1. A hydrocarbon conversion catalyst containing an ESR active Ti.sup.+3 species in combination with alumina which is prepared by:
- (a) impregnating alumina with a complex of anhydrous titanium tetrafluoride and an organic compound selected from the group consisting essentially of methanol, isopropanol, 2-methoxyethanol and 2-methoxypropene; and
- (b) heat treating the resulting impregnated alumina in an inert atmosphere.
- 2. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein said heat treating is performed at a temperature between about 50.degree. C. and about 1000.degree. C.
- 3. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein said inert atmosphere comprises nitrogen.
- 4. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein said heat treating is performed at 250.degree. C. to 650.degree. C. for 10 minutes to 10 hours.
- 5. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein the alumina has an apparent bulk density of about 0.3 to about 0.8 g/cc and a surface area of about 1 to about 500 m.sup.2 /g.
- 6. A method of preparing a hydrocarbon conversion catalyst containing an ESR active Ti.sup.+3 species in combination with alumina which comprises:
- (a) impregnating alumina with a complex of anhydrous titanium tetrafluoride and an organic compound selected from the group consisting essentially of methanol, isopropanol, 2-methoxyethanol and 2-methoxypropene; and
- (b) heat treating the resulting impregnated alumina in an inert atmosphere.
