Claims
- 1. A process for purifying a crude ester containing dimethyl terephthalate and methanol-esterified oxidation products of a mixture comprising para-xylene and methyl para-toluate which comprises:
- a) distilling said crude ester in a flash chamber; and
- b) separating said crude ester into a plurality of fractions with a single distillation column downstream of said flash chamber, said distillation column comprising structured packing;
- wherein said column is operated at a bottom temperature of about 180.degree. to 260.degree. C.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein said single distillation column is operated at an overhead temperature of about 100 to 220.degree. C.
- 3. The process of claim 2, wherein said single distillation column is operated at an overhead temperature of from about 100.degree. to 140.degree. C.
- 4. The process of claim 1, wherein said distillation column is operated at a pressure of about 30 to 220 mbar, and
- a pressure difference between a top and a bottom of said single distillation column is at most about 30 mbar.
- 5. The process of claim 1, wherein said plurality of fractions comprises a crude dimethyl terephthalate fraction at a bottom of said single distillation column, a high boiling residue fraction, and a low-boiling recyclable fraction from a top of said single distillation column.
- 6. The process of claim 5, wherein said high-boiling residue fraction comprises catalyst, and said low-boiling recyclable fraction comprises methyl para-toluate.
- 7. The process of claim 1, wherein said structured packing is corrosion resistant.
- 8. The process of claim 1, wherein said structured packing has a surface area of about 100 to 800 m.sup.2 /m.sup.3.
- 9. The process of claim 8, wherein said structured packing has a surface area of about 200 to 700 m.sup.2 /m.sup.3.
- 10. The process of claim 1, wherein said single distillation column is operated at a bottom temperature of from about 180.degree. to 245.degree. C.
- 11. The process of claim 10, wherein said single distillation column is operated at a bottom temperature of from about 190.degree. to 230.degree. C.
- 12. The process of claim 9, wherein said structured packing has a surface area of about 300 to 600 m.sup.2 /m.sup.3.
