Claims
- 1. A process for the manufacture of a colored or optically brightened shaped article of high polymer synthetic resin, comprising the steps of treating granules of water-insoluble, hydrophobic, high polymer, synthetic, thermoplastic resin with a non-emulsified two-phase mixture of a hydrophilic solvent and a lesser amount of an organophilic solvent containing a dispersed or dissolved dyestuff or optical brightener which is more soluble in the organophilic solvent than in the hydrophilic solvent, wherein the hydrophilic solvent and the organophilic solvent are soluble in each other to the extent of at least 0.1%, wherein the organophilic solvent is present to the extent of about 3% to about 1300% by weight of the resin, wherein the mixture of the hydrophilic and organophilic solvents do not dissolve or swell the resin granules, and wherein the treatment is carried out until the organophilic solvent phase and dyestuff or optical brightener is uniformly distributed on the surface of the resin granules, and finally removing the solvents and drying the treated resin granules.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the hydrophilic solvent and the organophilic solvent are soluble in each other to the extent of 0.1% to about 10%.
- 3. The process of claim 1, wherein the hydrophilic solvent is water.
- 4. The process of claim 2, wherein the hydrophilic solvent is water.
- 5. The process of claim 1, comprising the further step of shaping the treated granules from the melt or from solution.
- 6. The process of claim 3, wherein the resin granules are of non-halogen-containing resin.
- 7. The process of claim 6, wherein the resin is polyamide.
- 8. The process of claim 7, wherein the organophilic solvent is cyclohexanol or benzylalcohol.
- 9. The process of claim 6, wherein the resin is polyacrylonitrile.
- 10. The process of claim 1, wherein the solvent mixture includes a solvent selected from the group consisting of aliphatic alcohols, araliphatic alcohols, aliphatic ketones and araliphatic ketones.
- 11. The process of claim 10, wherein the hydrophilic solvent is water, and the organophilic solvent is an aliphatic or araliphatic alcohol or an alihpatic or araliphatic ketone having a water-solubility of 0.5 to 5% at ambient temperature.
- 12. The process of claim 10, wherein the organiphilic solvent is selected from the group consisting of cyclohexanol, benzyl alcohol, cyclohexanone or mesityloxide or mixtures thereof.
- 13. The process of claim 1, wherein the organophilic solvent is an aliphatic halogen hydrocarbon.
- 14. The process of claim 3, wherein the organophilic solvent is volatile with steam, has a boiling point greater than 100.degree.C, and at ambient temperature is soluble in the hydrophilic solvent to the extent of 0.5% to 8%.
- 15. The process of claim 7, wherein the organophilic solvent is cyclohexanol.
- 16. The process of claim 10, wherein the resin is polyester, the hydrophilic solvent is water and the organophilic solvent is cyclohexanone or mesityl oxide.
- 17. The process of claim 5, wherein the resin is polyamide, polyester or polypropylene, the hydrophilic solvent is water, and the organophilic solvent is water-soluble to the extent of 0.1% to about 10%.
- 18. The process of claim 3, wherein the resin is polypropylene, polyacrylonitrile, or mixtures thereof which are at least 60% polyacrylonitrile, wherein the granules are a fine powder, and the treatment mixture contains 10% to 60% of dyestuff.
- 19. The process of claim 1, wherein the dyestuff or optical brightener is finely ground in the organophilic solvent before mixture with the hydrophilic solvent.
- 20. The process of claim 1, wherein a non-ionized dyestuff is used.
- 21. The process of claim 1, wherein a disperse dyestuff is used.
- 22. The process of claim 21, wherein a metal complex disperse dyestuff is used.
- 23. The process of claim 1, wherein a vat or pigment dyestuff is used.
- 24. The process of claim 1, wherein the resin is polyamide or polyester and the dyestuff is a disperse or vat dyestuff.
- 25. The process of claim 22, wherein the resin is polyamide and the dyestuff is a metal complex of Al, Ni, Cu, Fe, Co or Cr.
- 26. The process of claim 1, wherein the resin is polyacrylonitrile and the dyestuff is a water-insoluble basic dyestuff.
- 27. The process of claim 5, wherein the dyestuff is soluble in the resin under the conditions prevailing in the shaping process.
- 28. The process of claim 10, wherein the organophilic solvent is a ketone and the dyestuff is dissolved or finely dispersed in the ketone by the addition of a strongly alkaline amine or an alkali hydroxide.
- 29. The process of claim 1, wherein the treatment mixture is prepared by dissolving a dyestuff in a strong acid, precipitated in fine particles by dilution with water, and finely mixed with the organophilic solvent.
- 30. The process of claim 1, wherein the treatment is carried out at room temperature or an elevated temperature below the boiling point of the solvent mixture.
