Claims
- 1. In a process for beneficiating coal which comprises chemically surface treating coal in an aqueous medium containing a liquid organic carrier to render said coal hydrophobic and oleophilic, thereafter separating the coal phase from the ash containing water phase and recovering the hydrophobic and oleophilic coal phase, the improvement comprising subjecting the chemically treated coal to high shear intermixing with at least one aqueous wash medium, whereby ash and other hydrophilic impurities are released into the water and a hydrophobic and oleophilic coal phase floats upon and separates from a water phase.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said high shear intermixing of said chemically treated coal with said aqueous wash medium is carried out by jetting said coal, under pressure, into at least one said aqueous wash medium.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein said chemically treated coal is jetted into said aqueous wash medium through one or more orifices of a nozzle.
- 4. The process of claim 2 wherein said coal phase is jetted into said aqueous wash medium under atomizing pressure through a spray nozzle.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the floating hydrophobic coal phase is recovered and dried of water.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein said coal phase is dried by mechanical means.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein said mechanical means is centrifugation.
- 8. The process of claim 3 wherein jetting the chemically treated coal into said aqueous wash medium through one or more orifices of a nozzle induces air inclusion both in the passage of the coal through the nozzle and on impingement upon and into the air-water interface of the aqueous wash medium.
- 9. The process of claim 4 wherein jetting the chemically treated coal into said aqueous wash medium under atomizing pressure through a spray nozzle induces air inclusion both in the passage of the coal through the spray nozzle and on impingement upon and into the air-water interface of the aqueous wash medium.
- 10. The process of claim 1 wherein said coal is pulverized.
- 11. The process of claim 1 wherein said aqueous wash medium contains a member selected from the group consisting of a polymerizable monomer, a polymerization catalyst, a liquid organic carrier and mixtures thereof.
- 12. The process of claim 11 wherein said polymerizable monomer is corn oil, said polymerization catalyst is cupric nitrate and hydrogen peroxide and said liquid organic carrier is fuel oil.
- 13. The process of claim 4 wherein said aqueous wash medium contains a member selected from the group consisting of a polymerizable monomer, a polymerization catalyst, a liquid organic carrier and mixtures thereof.
- 14. The process of claim 13 wherein said polymerizable monomer is corn oil, said polymerization catalyst is cupric nitrate and hydrogen peroxide and said liquid organic carrier is fuel oil.
- 15. The beneficiated coal product prepared by the process of claim 1.
- 16. The beneficiated coal product prepared by the process of claim 2.
- 17. The beneficiated coal product prepared by the process of claim 3.
- 18. The beneficiated coal product prepared by the process of claim 4.
- 19. The beneficiated coal product prepared by the process of claim 5.
- 20. The beneficiated coal product prepared by the process of claim 6.
- 21. The beneficiated coal product prepared by the process of claim 7.
- 22. The beneficiated coal product prepared by the process of claim 8.
- 23. The beneficiated coal product prepared by the process of claim 9.
- 24. The beneficiated coal product prepared by the process of claim 10.
- 25. The beneficiated coal product prepared by the process of claims 11, 12, 13 or 14.
- 26. A coal-oil mixture comprised of an intimate blend of the beneficiated coal product of claim 1 and fuel oil.
- 27. The coal-oil mixture of claim 26 comprised of from about 1 part by weight coal to about 1 part by weight fuel oil.
- 28. A coal slurry comprising a mixture of the beneficiated coal product of claim 11 or 13 and a carrier.
- 29. The coal slurry of claim 28 wherein said carrier is water.
- 30. The process of claim 11 wherein said polymerization catalyst is selected from the groups consisting of a free radical catalyst, an anionic catalyst and a cationic catalyst.
- 31. The beneficiated coal product prepared by the process of claim 30.
