A process for the isolation of 2,2-dimethyl-7-hydroxy-coumaran from a reaction mixture containing solvent, cyclic pyrocatechol ether and unreacted pyrocatechol by contacting the reaction mixture with at least one hydrocarbon selected from 2,2-dimethylpentane, n-dodecane, isodecane, tripropylene and pentamethylheptane the ether selectively entering the hydrocarbon.
- 2. A process according to claim 1, wherein the extraction is carried out in the presence of water whereby there is an increase in the selectivity of the extraction.
- 3. A process according to claim 1, wherein the cyclic ether is produced by etherifying pyrocatechol with methallyl halide to produce a pyrocatechol monomethallyl ether, and subjecting the monomethallyl ether to rearrangement.
