Claims
- 1. In the process for the conversion of an olefin selected from the group consisting of propylene, isobutylene and mixtures thereof, to acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and mixtures thereof respectively by reacting in the vapor phase at a temperature of from about 500.degree. to 1100.degree. F. and at a pressure of from about 0.5 to 5 atmospheres said olefin with a molecular oxygen-containing gas and ammonia in the presence of an oxide catalyst, the improvement comprising:
- conducting the reaction in the presence of a catalyst selected from the group of those catalysts having atomic ratios described by the empirical formula:
- A.sub.a B.sub.b C.sub.c D.sub.d Fe.sub.e Bi.sub.f Mo.sub.g O.sub.x
- wherein
- A is an alkali metal;
- B is one or more of the elements selected from the group consisting of nickel and cobalt;
- C is phosphorus or arsenic or both; and
- D is at least one element selected from Group IIB of the Periodic Classification of Elements; and
- wherein
- a is a number from 0 to less than 0.1;
- b is a number from 0 to 12;
- c is a number from 0 to 3;
- d is a number from 0.1 to 10;
- e and f are each a number from 0.1 to 6;
- g is a number from 8 to 16; and
- x is a number determined by the valence requirements of the other elements present.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said molecular oxygen-containing gas is air.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein the olefin is propylene.
- 4. The process of claim 2 wherein the olefin is isobutylene.
- 5. The process of claim 3 wherein the molar ratios of olefin:oxygen:ammonia are within the range of 1:0.5-4:0.5-5.
- 6. The process of claim 5 carried out in the presence of steam.
- 7. The process of claim 1 wherein said catalyst is supported on a catalyst support material.
- 8. The process of claim 1 carried out in the presence of a fluidized catalyst, in a fluid bed reactor, and optionally in the presence of steam.
- 9. The process of claim 1 wherein B in the catalyst formula is cobalt and nickel and b is a positive number.
- 10. The process of claim 1 wherein B in the catalyst formula is nickel and b is a positive number.
- 11. The process of claim 1 wherein B in the catalyst formula is cobalt and b is a positive number.
- 12. The process of claim 1 wherein said catalyst consists essentially of:
- A.sub.a B.sub.b C.sub.c D.sub.d Fe.sub.e Bi.sub.f Mo.sub.g O.sub.x
- 13. The process of claim 1 wherein said catalyst consists of:
- A.sub.a B.sub.b C.sub.c D.sub.d Fe.sub.e Bi.sub.f Mo.sub.g O.sub.x.
