Claims
- 1. In the process of oxychlorination of ethane to prepare ethylene, vinyl chloride, and other chlorinated hydrocarbons, the improvement comprising the use of, as a catalyst, a solid solution catalyst consisting of iron cations in a host lattice of .alpha.-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 or .beta.-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, said catalyst having an iron content from about 1 percent to about 15 percent by weight, expressed as the oxide, prepared by employing a calcinating step at temperatures above about 1100.degree. C., and having an X-ray diffraction pattern having peak positions in the pattern different than that of its host lattice.
- 2. In the process of oxychlorination of an alkane of 1 to about 12 carbon atoms at a temperature from about 400.degree. C. to about 650.degree. C. wherein the alkane, oxygen, and hydrogen chloride are employed at a mole ratio of 1 mole of alkane to 0.1 to 10 moles of hydrogen chloride to 0.1 to 1.5 moles of oxygen, the improvement comprising the use of, as a catalyst, a solid solution catalyst consisting of iron cations in a host lattice of .alpha.-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 or .beta.-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, said catalyst having an iron content from about 1 percent to about 15 percent by weight, expressed as the oxide, prepared by employing a calcinating step at temperatures above about 1100.degree. C., and having an X-ray diffraction pattern having peak positions in the pattern different than that of its host lattice.
- 3. A process of claim 2 wherein the alkane employed has 2 to about 6 carbon atoms in the molecule.
