Claims
- 1. In a process for the oxychlorination of ethylene to 1,2-dichloroethane, the improvement comprising catalyzing the oxychlorination reaction by a catalyst composition consisting essentially of an alumina support on which there is deposited cupric chloride, magnesium chloride, and lithium chloride, wherein the lithium metal in the catalyst composition is employed in an atomic ratio relative to copper of between 0.0001 to 2 parts lithium per part copper.
- 2. The oxychlorination process according to claim 1, wherein said cupric chloride, magnesium chloride, and lithium chloride are employed in atomic ratios between 1:0.3-1:0.001-1.
- 3. The oxychlorination process of claim 1, wherein said cupric chloride, magnesium chloride, and lithium chloride are employed in atomic ratios of about 1:0.1:1.5.
- 4. The oxychlorination process of claim 1, wherein said cupric chloride, magnesium chloride, and lithium chloride are employed in atomic ratios of about 1:1.5:0.0001.
- 5. The oxychlorination process of claim 1, wherein said cupric chloride, magnesium chloride, and lithium chloride are employed in atomic ratios of about 1:1.5:1.5.
- 6. In a process for the oxychlorination of ethylene to 1,2-dichloroethane, the improvement comprising catalyzing the oxychlorination reaction by a catalyst composition consisting essentially of an alumina support, having a specific surface measured according to the B.E.T. method between 50 m.sup.2 /g and 250 m.sup.2 /g, on which there are deposited cupric chloride, magnesium chloride, and lithium chloride, wherein the lithium metal in the catalyst composition is employed in an atomic ratio relative to copper of between 0.0001 to 2 parts lithium:1 part copper.
- 7. In a process for the oxychlorination of ethylene to 1,2-dichloroethane, the improvement comprising catalyzing the oxychlorination reaction by a catalyst composition consisting essentially of an alumina support on which there is deposited cupric chloride, magnesium chloride, and lithium chloride employed in atomic ratios of about 1:0.1 to 1.5:0.0001 to 1.5.
- 8. The oxychlorination process set forth in claim 7, wherein the lithium metal in the catalyst composition is employed in an atomic ratio relative to copper of between 0.05 to 0.66 parts lithium per part copper.
- 9. The oxychlorination process set forth in claim 7, wherein said alumina support has a specific surface measured according to the B.E.T. method between about 50 m.sup.2 /g and 250 m.sup.2 /g.
- 10. The oxychorination process set forth in claim 7, wherein said cupric chloride, magnesium chloride, and lithium chloride are employed in atomic ratios between 1:0.3 to 1:0.0001 to 1.
- 11. The oxychlorination process set forth in claim 7, wherein said cupric chloride, magnesium chloride, and lithium chloride are employed in atomic ratios of about 1:0.1:1.5.
- 12. The oxychlorination process of claim 7, wherein said cupric chloride, magnesium chloride, and lithium chloride are employed in atomic ratios of about 1:1.5:0.0001.
- 13. The oxychlorination process set forth in claim 7, wherein said cupric chloride, magnesium chloride, and lithium chloride are employed in atomic ratios of about 1:1.5:1.5.
- 14. The oxychlorination process set forth in claim 7, wherein said cupric chloride, magnesium chloride, and lithium chloride are employed in atomic ratios of about 1:0.8:0.05.
