Claims
- 1. A process for the polymerization or copolymerization of ethylene comprising the steps of:
- (a) preparing a reaction mixture containing ethylene, optionally another olefin, and a catalyst composition;
- (b) reacting said reaction mixture to obtain polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene;
- (c) wherein said catalyst composition comprising a catalyst represented by the formula of (C.sub.5 R.sub.n H.sub.5-n)(L)MX.sub.a Y.sub.b and a trialkyl aluminum cocatalyst wherein:
- (i) C.sub.5 R.sub.n H.sub.5-n is a substituted or unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl group, n is an integer between 0 and 5, and R is C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl group;
- (ii) L is tetrapyrazolyl borate, hydrotrispyrazolyl borate, dihydrobispyrazolyl borate or hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl) borate;
- (iii) M is a Group Group IVB transitional metal;
- (iv) a and b are integers such that a+b=m-2, wherein m is the valance of M; and
- (v) X and Y, which can be the same of different from each other, are a halogen atom or a ligand represented by the formula of ER.sup.1, wherein E is a Group VIA element, and R.sup.1 is C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl group, aryl or halogen-substituted aryl group.
- 2. A process for the polymerization or copolymerization of ethylene according to claim 1 wherein the values of both said a and b are one.
- 3. A process for the polymerization or copolymerization of ethylene according to claim 1 wherein said catalyst is represented by the following formula: ##STR3##
- 4. A process for the polymerization or copolymerization of ethylene according to claim 1 wherein at least one said X or Y is a ligand represented by the formula of ER.sup.1.
- 5. A process for the polymerization or copolymerization of ethylene according to claim 1 wherein said catalyst is represented by one of the formulas selected from the group consisting of:
- (a) (.eta..sup.5 --C.sub.5 H.sub.5)�HB(C.sub.3 H.sub.3 N.sub.2).sub.3 !Zr(OC.sub.6 H.sub.5).sub.2 ;
- (b) (.eta..sup.5 --C.sub.5 H.sub.5)�HB(C.sub.3 H.sub.3 N.sub.2).sub.3 !Zr(OC(CH.sub.3))Cl;
- (c) (.eta..sup.5 --C.sub.5 Me.sub.5)�HB(C.sub.3 H.sub.3 N.sub.2).sub.3 !Zr(OC.sub.6 F.sub.5).sub.2 ; and
- (d) (.eta..sup.5 --C.sub.5 H.sub.5)�HB(C.sub.3 H.sub.3 N.sub.2).sub.3 !Zr(OC.sub.6 F.sub.5).sub.2 ;
- wherein .eta..sup.5 --C.sub.5 H.sub.5 represents a cyclopentadienyl group and Me represents a methyl group.
- 6. A process for the polymerization or copolymerization of ethylene according to claim 1 wherein said catalyst composition does not contain either methyl aluminoxane or a borate anion.
