Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of compounds represented by the formula: ##STR19## wherein: R.sup.1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl;
- R.sup.3 is hydrogen or alkyl;
- R.sup.4 is lower alkyl or optionally substituted phenyl;
- R.sup.6 is hydrogen or lower alkyl;
- R.sup.7 is ##STR20## or R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 taken together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached represent a group of the formula: ##STR21## wherein: m is 0 or 1;
- n is 0, 1, 2 or 3;
- R.sup.8 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, or optionally substituted phenyl;
- R.sup.9 is optionally substituted phenyl;
- X is --(CH.sub.2).sub.n --, or 1-piperidin-4-yl; and
- Y is --CH--, or --N--;
- which process comprises:
- a) cyclizing a compound represented by the formula: ##STR22## to give a compound represented by the formula: ##STR23## wherein R.sup.2 is hydrogen and R.sup.1, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are as defined; followed by:
- b) contacting the compound thus formed with a compound represented by the formula: ##STR24## R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 are as defined: in the presence of formaldehyde.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein in step a) the cyclization is carried out in the presence of a catalyst chosen from palladium(II) acetate, palladium(II) trifluoroacetate, and sodium tetrachloroaurate dihydrate.
- 3. The process of claim 1, wherein the catalyst is palladium(II) acetate.
- 4. The process of claim 1, wherein the cyclization is carried out in tetrahydrofuran, ethanol or acetonitrile at reflux temperature.
- 5. The process of claim 1, wherein in step b) the reaction is carried out in ethanol at reflux temperature.
- 6. The process of claim 1, wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen, and R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 taken together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached represent a group of the formula: ##STR25## wherein m and n are both 0, and Y is --N--.
- 7. The process of claim 6, wherein R.sup.3 is hydrogen, R.sup.4 is 4-methylphenyl, and R.sup.8 and R.sup.9 are both phenyl.
- 8. The process of claim 7, wherein R.sup.3 is hydrogen, R.sup.4 is 4-trifluoromethylphenyl, R.sup.8 is hydrogen, and R.sup.9 is 2,3,4-trimethoxyphenyl.
- 9. The process of claim 7, wherein R.sup.3 is methyl, R.sup.4 is 4-trifluoromethylphenyl, and R.sup.8 and R.sup.9 are both phenyl.
- 10. The process of claim 7, wherein R.sup.3 is methyl, R.sup.4 is 4-trifluoromethylphenyl, R.sup.8 is hydrogen, and R.sup.9 is 2,3,4-trimethoxyphenyl.
