Claims
- 1. A process for the continuous preparation of 3-(methylthio)propanal, comprising:
contacting a gaseous acrolein feed stream with a liquid reaction medium, said reaction medium containing 3-(methylthio)propanal and a catalyst for the reaction between methyl mercaptan and acrolein, said gaseous acrolein feed stream comprising acrolein vapor and non-condensable gas, whereby acrolein from said feed stream is transferred to said liquid medium; introducing methyl mercaptan into said reaction medium; reacting acrolein with methyl mercaptan in said medium in a first reaction zone comprising said gas/liquid contact zone to produce a liquid reaction product containing 3-(methylthio)propanal, the liquid reaction medium exiting said gas/liquid contact zone containing between about 0.8% and about 5% weight acrolein; and passing the reaction product from said first reaction zone through a second reaction zone to convert residual acrolein and methyl mercaptan to 3-(methylthio)propanal.
- 2. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the acrolein content of the reaction medium exiting said gas/liquid contact zone is between about 1.0% and about 3.0% by weight.
- 3. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein said second reaction zone comprises a plug flow reactor.
- 4. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein methyl mercaptan is introduced into said reaction medium in a proportion which is substantially stoichiometrically equivalent to the acrolein introduced into said medium and acrolein is reacted with methyl mercaptan in said medium without substantial formation of the intermediate hemi(methylthio)acetal of 3-(methylthio)propanal to produce a liquid reaction product containing 3-(methylthio)propanal, said first reaction zone comprising said gas/liquid contact zone, the reaction product exiting said gas/liquid contact zone containing between about 0.8% and about 5% by weight acrolein.
- 5. A process as set forth in claim 4 wherein the acrolein content of the reaction medium exiting said gas/liquid contact zone is between about 1.0% and about 3.0% by weight.
- 6. A process as set forth in claim 4 wherein said second reaction zone comprises a plug flow reactor.
- 7. A process for the continuous preparation of 3-(methylthio)propanal, comprising:
contacting a liquid reaction medium with a gaseous acrolein feed stream in a gas/liquid contact zone through which said feed stream and said reaction medium are passed countercurrently, said reaction medium containing 3-(methylthio)propanal and a catalyst for the reaction between methyl mercaptan and acrolein, said gaseous acrolein feed stream comprising acrolein vapor and non-condensable gas, whereby acrolein is transferred from said feed stream to said reaction medium; introducing a primary methyl mercaptan feed stream into said countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone at a rate which provides a supply of methyl mercaptan that is less than stoichiometrically equivalent to the rate of introduction of acrolein into said contact zone; reacting acrolein with methyl mercaptan in a first reaction zone in which acrolein is in stoichiometric excess with respect to methyl mercaptan, thereby producing an intermediate reaction product; introducing a secondary methyl mercaptan feed stream into said intermediate reaction product outside said countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone; passing said intermediate reaction product into a second reaction zone where methyl mercaptan introduced in said secondary feed stream reacts to convert residual acrolein in the intermediate reaction product to 3-(methylthio)propanal; dividing the reaction medium exiting said second reaction zone into a product fraction and a circulating fraction; and recirculating the circulating fraction to said countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone.
- 8. A process as set forth in claim 7 wherein said second reaction zone comprises a plug flow reactor.
- 9. A process as set forth in claim 7 wherein said first reaction zone comprises the portion of said countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone that is downstream of the point of introduction of methyl mercaptan with respect to the flow of said medium.
- 10. A process as set forth in claim 7 wherein acrolein is introduced into the gas liquid/contact zone at a point upstream or downstream of the point of introduction of methyl mercaptan with respect to the direction of flow of said medium.
- 11. A process as set forth in claim 7 wherein the available methyl mercaptan content of the circulating fraction is less than about 1% by weight at the point that it is introduced into the countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone.
- 12. A process as set forth in claim 7 wherein the acrolein content of the reaction medium exiting said countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone is between about 0.8% and about 5%.
- 13. A process as set forth in claim 12 wherein the acrolein content of the reaction medium exiting said countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone is between about 1.0% and about 3.0%.
- 14. A process as set forth in claim 7 wherein the total mercaptan supply as provided in said primary and secondary mercaptan feed streams is substantially stoichiometrically equivalent to the acrolein contained in said gaseous acrolein feed stream, and between about 20% and about 95% of said total methyl mercaptan supply is provided in said primary mercaptan feed stream.
- 15. A process as set forth in claim 7 wherein the total mercaptan supply as provided in said primary and secondary mercaptan feed streams is substantially stoichiometrically equivalent to the acrolein contained in said gaseous acrolein feed stream, and between about 20% and about 80% of said total methyl mercaptan supply is provided in said primary mercaptan feed stream.
- 16. A process for the continuous preparation of 3-(methylthio)propanal, comprising:
contacting a liquid reaction medium with a gaseous acrolein feed stream in a gas/liquid contact zone through which said feed stream and said reaction medium are passed countercurrently, said reaction medium containing 3-(methylthio)propanal and a catalyst for the reaction between methyl mercaptan and acrolein, said gaseous acrolein feed stream comprising acrolein vapor and non-condensable gas, whereby acrolein is transferred from said feed stream to said reaction medium; introducing a primary methyl mercaptan feed stream into said countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone at a rate which provides a supply of methyl mercaptan that is less than stoichiometrically equivalent to the rate of introduction of acrolein into said contact zone; reacting acrolein with methyl mercaptan in a first reaction zone in which acrolein is in stoichiometric excess with respect to methyl mercaptan; dividing the reaction medium exiting said first reaction zone into an intermediate product fraction and a circulating fraction; recirculating the circulating fraction to said countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone; introducing a secondary methyl mercaptan feed stream into said intermediate product fraction; and passing said intermediate product fraction into a second reaction zone where methyl mercaptan reacts to convert residual acrolein in the intermediate fraction to 3-(methylthio)propanal.
- 17. A process as set forth in claim 16 wherein said second reaction zone comprises a plug flow reactor.
- 18. A process as set forth in claim 17 wherein said first reaction zone comprises the portion of said countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone that is downstream of the point of introduction of methyl mercaptan with respect to the flow of said medium.
- 19. A process as set forth in claim 17 wherein acrolein is introduced into the gas liquid/contact zone at a point upstream or downstream of the point of introduction of methyl mercaptan with respect to the direction of flow of said medium.
- 20. A process as set forth in claim 17 wherein the available methyl mercaptan content of the circulating fraction is less than about 1% by weight at the point that it is introduced into the countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone.
- 21. A process as set forth in claim 17 wherein the acrolein content of the reaction medium exiting said countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone is between about 0.8% and about 5%.
- 22. A process as set forth in claim 21 wherein the acrolein content of the reaction medium exiting said countercurrent gas/liquid contact zone is between about 1.0% and about 3.0%.
- 23. A process as set forth in claim 17 wherein the total mercaptan supply as provided in said primary and secondary mercaptan feed streams is substantially stoichiometrically equivalent to the acrolein contained in said gaseous acrolein feed stream, and between about 20% and about 95% of said total methyl mercaptan supply is provided in said primary mercaptan feed stream.
- 24. A process as set forth in claim 17 wherein the total mercaptan supply as provided in said primary and secondary mercaptan feed streams is substantially stoichiometrically equivalent to the acrolein contained in said gaseous acrolein feed stream, and between about 20% and about 80% of said total methyl mercaptan supply is provided in said primary mercaptan feed stream.
- 25. A process for the continuous preparation of 3-(methylthio)propanal, comprising:
contacting a liquid reaction medium with a gaseous acrolein feed stream in a gas/liquid contact zone through which said feed stream and said reaction medium are passed countercurrently, said reaction medium containing 3-(methylthio)propanal and a catalyst for the reaction between methyl mercaptan and acrolein, said gaseous acrolein feed stream comprising acrolein vapor and non-condensable gas, whereby acrolein is transferred from said feed stream to said reaction medium, the liquid medium exiting said gas/liquid contact zone containing between about 0.8% and about 5% by weight acrolein; introducing methyl mercaptan into said reaction medium; and reacting acrolein with methyl mercaptan in said medium to produce a liquid reaction product containing 3-(methylthio)propanal.
- 26. A process as set forth in claim 25 wherein the acrolein content of the reaction medium exiting said gas/liquid contact zone is between about 1.0% and about 3.0% by weight.
- 27. A process as set forth in claim 25 wherein acrolein is reacted with methyl mercaptan in said medium within said gas/liquid contact zone;
non-condensable gas is separated from said liquid reaction product; said reaction product is divided into a product fraction and a circulating fraction; and said circulating fraction is recirculated to said gas/liquid contact zone.
- 28. A process as set forth in claim 27 wherein the acrolein content of the reaction medium exiting said gas/liquid contact zone is between about 1.0% and about 3.0% by weight.
