Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a compound of the formula V: ##STR15## which comprises reacting a compound of the formula IV: ##STR16## with an alkali metal alkoxide of a lower alcohol in an inert solvent at a controlled temperature followed by acidification.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the reaction is conducted with sodium methoxide at from about 60.degree. to about 70.degree. C., in dimethylformamide.
- 3. A process for preparing a compound of the formula I: ##STR17## which comprises methylating compound V: ##STR18## at an elevated temperature by reaction with a methylating agent in an aqueous alcoholic solvent containing excess base, followed by acidification, to obtain compound I directly.
- 4. A process according to claim 3 wherein the methylation is conducted at from about 75.degree. to about 80.degree. C., using dimethylsulfate in an aqueous alcohol system containing excess sodium hydroxide.
- 5. A process for preparing a compound of the formula I: ##STR19## which comprises methylating compound V: ##STR20## at an elevated temperature by reaction with a methylating agent in an non-aqueous medium in the presence of excess base, followed by acidification to obtain the desired compound I directly.
- 6. A process according to claim 5 wherein the methylation is conducted at from about 50.degree. to about 80.degree. C., using methyl iodide, in dimethylformamide containing excess sodium hydride.
- 7. A process for preparing a compound of the formula I: ##STR21## which comprises heating compound VI: ##STR22## with an organic base in an inert solvent.
- 8. A process according to claim 7 wherein compound VI is heated to about 100.degree. C. in xylene containing triethylamine to obtain the desired compound I.
- 9. A process according to claim 7 wherein, in an alternative process, compound VI is heated in an aqueous base at a temperature of from about 90.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C., followed by acidification, to obtain the desired compound I.
- 10. A process according to claim 9 wherein compound VI is reacted with aqueous sodium hydroxide at from about 90.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C., followed by acidification to obtain the desired compound I.
