Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of a 7-amino-cepham-4-carboxylic acid having the formula: ##STR8## wherein R.sup.1 represents benzyl or phenoxymethyl, R.sup.2 represents methyl, benzyl, p-nitrobenzyl or trichloromethyl, and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, comprising the step of contacting, in an inert solvent at a temperature of from 70.degree. C. to 130.degree. C., one molar proportion of a penicillin sulfoxide ester having the formula: ##STR9## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same as above defined, with from 1 to 2 molar proportions of a metal halide having the formula:
- MX.sub.n
- wherein M is zinc, tin or mercury, X is a halogen selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine and iodine, and n is an integer from 1 to 5.
- 2. The process according to claim 1 in which a metal halide is selected from stannous halide, zinc halide and mercuric halide.
- 3. A process for the preparation of a 7-amino-cepham-4-carboxylic acid having the formula: ##STR10## wherein R.sup.1 represents benzyl or phenoxymethyl, and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, comprising the step of contacting, in an inert solvent at a temperature of from 70.degree. C. to 130.degree. C., one molar proportion of a penicillin sulfoxide ester having the formula: ##STR11## wherein R.sup.1 is the same as above defined, R.sup.3 represents benzyl, p-nitrobenzyl, or 2,2,2-trichloroethyl, with from 1 to 2 molar proportions of a metallic halide having the formula:
- MX.sub.n
- wherein M is zinc, tin or mercury, X is a halogen selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine, and iodine, and n is an integer from 1 to 5 and heating the resulting compound having the formula: ##STR12## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.3 and X are the same as above, in a reductive atmosphere to form said acid.
- 4. The process according to claim 3 wherein said 3-methyl, 2-halo ester of the final formula of claim 3 is heated with palladium on charcoal in a hydrogen atmosphere.
- 5. The process according to claim 3 in which said 3-methyl, 2-halo ester of the final formula of claim 3 is heated with zinc dust.
- 6. A process for the preparation of a desacetoxycephalosporanic acid having the formula: ##STR13## wherein R.sup.1 represents benzyl or phenoxymethyl and R.sup.2 represents methyl, benzyl, p-nitrobenzyl or 2,2,2-trichloromethyl, comprising the step of contacting a 7-amino-cepham-4-carboxylic acid having the formula: ##STR14## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same as above defined, and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, with a base selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal carbonate, a reaction soluble trialkylamine and pyridine.
- 7. The process according to claim 6 in which the base is a trialkylamine or pyridine.
- 8. The process according to claim 6 in wherein alkaline carbonate is sodium carbonate.
