Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of a compound of the formula ##STR35## wherein R.sub.1 is ##STR36## Y.sub.1 and Y.sub.2 may both be methyl or when Y.sub.1 is hydrogen, Y.sub.2 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR37## and Y.sub.3 and Y.sub.4 are individually selected from the group consisting of fluorine, bromine, chlorine, or the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl, Z is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and when Y.sub.1 and Y.sub.2 are methyl or when Y.sub.1 is hydrogen and Y.sub.2 is ##STR38## R.sub.2 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR39## A- is selected from the group consisting of ##STR40## and when Y.sub.1 is hydrogen and Y.sub.2 is --CHBr--CCl.sub.2 Br, R.sub.2 is m-phenoxyphenyl, the said acid moiety may be in the cis or trans form or mixtures thereof or optically active isomeric form or racemic mixtures thereof, comprising reacting in an anhydrous medium an acid halide of the formula ##STR41## wherein Y.sub.1 and Y.sub.2 and Z have the above definition and X is selected from the group consisting of fluorine, chlorine and bromine with an aldehyde of the formula ##STR42## wherein R.sub.2 has the above definition in the presence of an acid catalyst to obtain a compound of the formula ##STR43## that may be in one of two diastereoisomeric forms due to the existence of the asymetrical carbon atoms to which X is attached and reacting the obtained compound with a compound which generates CN.sup.- ions to obtain the corresponding above compound.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the acid catalyst is a Lewis acid selected from the group consisting of zinc chloride, aluminum chloride and ferric chloride.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the acid catalyst is a protonic acid selected from the group consisting of p-toluene sulfonic acid and oleum.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein X is selected from the group consisting of fluorine and chlorine.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the condensation with the cyanide ion generating agent is effected in an anhydrous organic solvent.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein the solvent is selected from the group consisting of acetonitrile and dimethylformamide.
- 7. The process of claim 1 wherein the cyanide ion generator is an alkali metal cyanide.
