Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of a cyclic sulphate of formula: ##STR5## in which R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are identical or different and each represents hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, phenyl, alkoxy, phenyloxy or alkoxycarbonyl, the said alkyl radicals and alkyl portions of the alkoxy or alkoxycarbonyl radicals containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms each and being unsubstituted or substituted by at least one identical or different atoms or radicals selected from halogen, alkoxy, phenyloxy or alkoxycarbonyl, the said phenyl radicals and the phenyl portions of the phenyloxy radicals being unsubstituted or substituted by at least one identical or different atoms or radicals selected from halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, phenyloxy or alkoxycarbonyl, and n is 0 or 1, which comprises oxidizing a cyclic sulphite of formula: ##STR6## in which R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and n are as previously defined, with a hypohalite of an alkali or alkaline-earth metal in the presence of a catalytic quantity of a ruthenium derivative, in an aqueous or aqueous-organic medium at a temperature below 10.degree. C.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the ruthenium derivative is ruthenium (IV) oxide or ruthenium trichloride.
- 3. A process according to claim 1 wherein from 10.sup.-6 to 10.sup.-1 mole of ruthenium derivative is used per mole of the cyclic sulphite.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein the hypohalite of an alkali or alkaline-earth metal is sodium hypochlorite, potassium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein 1 to 2 moles of hypohalite are used per mole of the cyclic sulphite.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 wherein the oxidation is effected in an aqueous-organic medium comprising an optionally halogenated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon or ester.
- 7. A process according to claim 1 wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are identical or different and each represents hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms which is unsubstituted or substituted by chlorine, and n is 0 or 1.
- 8. A process according to claim 1 wherein ethylene sulphite or propylene sulphite is oxidized to ethylene sulphate or propylene sulphate respectively.
- 9. Process for the preparation of 1-chloromethylethylene sulphate comprising oxidizing 1-chloromethylethylene sulphite with a hypohalite of an alkali or alkaline earth metal in the presence of a catalytic quantity of a ruthenium derivative in an aqueous or aqueous-organic medium at a temperature below 10.degree. C.
