Claims
- 1. A process for the manufacture of xylene from 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, comprising:
(a) feeding to a reactor a reactor feed consisting essentially of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane and a diluent gas selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, methane, ethane, propane and mixtures thereof, wherein the molar concentration of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane in the reactor feed is about 50% or less; and (b) contacting, in the vapor phase, said reactor feed with a catalyst comprising chromium to produce a reactor effluent containing xylene and by-products comprising
2,2,4-trimethylpentenes, isobutane, isobutylene, and unreacted 2,2,4-trimethylpentane.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the reactor feed consists of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane and a diluent gas selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, methane, ethane, propane and mixtures thereof.
- 3. A process for the manufacture of xylene from 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, comprising:
(a) feeding to a reactor a reactor feed comprising 2,2,4-trimethylpentane and a methane diluent gas, wherein the molar concentration of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane in the reactor feed is about 50% or less; and (b) contacting, in the vapor phase, said reactor feed with a catalyst comprising chromium to produce a reactor effluent containing xylene and by-products comprising
2,2,4-trimethylpentenes, isobutane, isobutylene, and unreacted 2,2,4-trimethylpentane.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein the reactor feed further comprises an ethane diluent gas.
- 5. The process of claim 3 wherein the reactor feed further comprises a propane diluent gas.
- 6. The process of claim 3 wherein the reactor feed further comprises an ethane diluent gas and a propane diluent gas.
- 7. The process of claim 3 wherein the reactor feed further comprises a nitrogen diluent gas.
- 8. The process of claim 3 wherein the process further comprises a step of separating methane from the effluent produced in step (b), and recycling the methane to the reactor of step (a).
- 9. A process for the manufacture of xylene from 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, comprising:
(a) feeding to a reactor a reactor feed comprising 2,2,4-trimethylpentane and an ethane diluent gas, wherein the molar concentration of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane in the reactor feed is about 50% or less; and (b) contacting, in the vapor phase, said reactor feed with a catalyst comprising chromium to produce a reactor effluent containing xylene and by-products comprising
2,2,4-trimethylpentenes, isobutane, isobutylene, and unreacted 2,2,4-trimethylpentane.
- 10. The process of claim 9 wherein the reactor feed further comprises a propane diluent gas.
- 11. The process of claim 9 wherein the reactor feed further comprises a nitrogen diluent gas.
- 12. The process of claim 9 wherein the process further comprises a step of separating ethane from the effluent produced in step (b), and recycling the ethane to the reactor of step (a).
- 13. A process for the manufacture of xylene from 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, comprising:
(a) feeding to a reactor a reactor feed comprising 2,2,4-trimethylpentane and a propane diluent gas, wherein the molar concentration of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane in the reactor feed is about 50% or less; and (b) contacting, in the vapor phase, said reactor feed with a catalyst comprising chromium to produce a reactor effluent containing xylene and by-products comprising
2,2,4-trimethylpentenes, isobutane, isobutylene, and unreacted 2,2,4-trimethylpentane.
- 14. The process of claim 13 wherein the reactor feed further comprises a nitrogen diluent gas.
- 15. The process of claim 13 wherein the process further comprises a step of separating propane from the effluent produced in step (b), and recycling the propane to the reactor of step (a).
- 16. The process of claims 1, 3, 9 and 13 wherein the molar concentration of
2,2,4-trimethylpentane in the reactor feed is about 20% or less.
- 17. The process of claims 1, 3, 9 and 13 wherein the 2,2,4-trimethylpentenes and the unreacted 2,2,4-trimethylpentane are separated from the other by-product and from xylene, and are recycled to the reactor of step (a).
- 18. The process of claims 1, 3, 9 and 13 wherein the process further comprises a step of separating the isobutane and isobutylene from the effluent produced in step (b), and passing the separated isobutane and isobutylene over a bed of a dimerization catalyst in a separate reactor zone and dimerizing the isobutane and isobutylene to produce a mixture consisting essentially of trimethylpentane, trimethylpentene-1, and trimethylpentene-2.
- 19. The process of claim 18 wherein the trimethylpentane, trimethylpentene-1, and trimethylpentene-2 produced by dimerization are recycled to the reactor of step (a).
- 20. The process of claim 18 wherein the dimerization is run over a silica-alumina catalyst at a temperature of about 150C. to about 200C.
- 21. The process of claim 18 wherein the dimerization is run over a hydrogen fluoride or sulfuric acid catalyst at a temperature from about 5° C. to about 50° C.
- 22. The process of claims 1, 3, 9 and 13 wherein the process further comprises a step of separating xylene from the by-products and unreacted 2,2,4-trimethylpentane and diluent gas.
- 23. The process of claims 1, 3, 9 and 13 wherein said catalyst is supported on an inorganic oxide selected from the group consisting of alumina, eta-alumina, and zirconia.
- 24. The process of claims 1, 3, 9 and 13 wherein said catalyst is treated with a metal selected from the group consisting of iron, tin, and tungsten.
- 25. The process of claims 1, 3, 9 and 13 wherein said catalyst further comprises at least one metal selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, and barium.
- 26. The process of claims 1, 3, 9 and 13 wherein said catalyst comprises chromium and potassium supported on eta-alumina.
- 27. The process of claims 1, 3, 9 and 13 wherein the xylene produced in step (b) comprises greater than 95% p-xylene.
