Claims
- 1. A method for the benzylation of an aromatic compound, comprising: contacting the aromatic compound with a substituted benzyl alcohol in the presence of a spherically shaped porous microcomposite catalyst comprising a perfluorinated ion-exchange polymer containing pendant sulfonic and/or carboxylic acid groups entrapped within and highly dispersed throughout a network of inorganic oxide, wherein the weight percentage of the perfluorinated ion-exchange polymer in the microcomposite is from about 0.1 to about 90 percent, and wherein the size of the pose s in the microcomposite is about 0.5 nm to about 75 nm.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the aromatic compound is benzene or p-xylene and the substituted benzyl alcohol is p-methylbenzvl alcohol.
