Claims
- 1. In a surface modified substrate having free primary amino groups on the surface to bind a biologically active material, the improvement wherein the surface modified substrate comprises a layer of a polyamine having a high average molecular weight which is cross-linked with crotonaldehyde.
- 2. A surface modified substrate according to claim 1 wherein the said layer of polyamine cross-linked with crotonaldehyde is achieved by applying to a solid substrate an aqueous solution containing the polyamine and the crotonaldehyde.
- 3. A surface modified substrate according to claim 1 wherein a polyamine is first absorbed onto the surface of a solid substrate and the thus treated substrate is then contacted with a solution containing crotonaldehyde to achieve cross-linking.
- 4. A surface modified substrate according to claim 1 wherein following the obtaining of the layer of the polyamine cross-linked with crotonaldehyde there is applied to the resultant substrate a solution of an anionic polysaccharide to obtain at least one adsorbed layer of said anionic polysaccharide.
- 5. A surface modified substrate according to claim 4 containing a plurality of adsorbed layers of anionic polysaccharide, each of said layers alternating with an adsorbed layer of the polyamine cross-linked with crotonaldehyde.
- 6. A surface modified substrate according to claim 1 wherein the final layer on the treated surface of the substrate is an adsorbed layer of a high average molecular weight polyamine which is not cross-linked in order to provide free primary amino groups.
- 7. A surface modified substrate according to claim 4 wherein the final layer on the treated surface of the substrate is an adsorbed layer of a high average molecular weight polyamine which is not cross-linked in order to provide free primary amino groups.
- 8. A surface modified substrate according to claim 6 wherein the free primary amino groups are quaternized.
- 9. A surface modified substrate according to claim 7 wherein the free primary amino groups are subsequently quaternized.
- 10. A surface modified substrate according to claim 1 wherein the substrate is a member selected from the group consisting of metal, glass and a polymeric material.
- 11. A surface modified substrate according to claim 10 wherein the substrate is a member selected from the group consisting of stainless steel and aluminum.
- 12. A surface modified substrate according to claim 10, wherein the substrate is a member selected from the group consisting of polyvinylchloride, polyurethane, silicon rubber, polytetrafluoroethylene, polystyrene and polyolefin.
- 13. A surface modified substrate according to claim 4 wherein the polysaccharide is dextran sulfate.
- 14. A surface modified substrate according to claim 1 wherein the polyamine is polyethylenimine.
