Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of a compound of the formula (I) ##STR9## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 each is hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 together or R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 together form alkylene; and R.sup.4 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoyl, or aroyl, which comprises the step of reacting a compound of the formula (II) ##STR10## with chloral in a 1 to 1 molar ratio in the presence of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of FeCl.sub.3 .times.6H.sub.2 O, FeSO.sub.4 .times.2H.sub.2 O, Fe(NH.sub.4).sub.2 (SO.sub.4).sub.2 .times.6H.sub.2 O, anhydrous FeCl.sub.3 and triethylamine in a 1 to 2 molar ratio, Fe.sub.3 (PO.sub.4).sub.2 .times.8H.sub.2 O, FeBr.sub.3 .times.6H.sub.2 O and (NH.sub.4).sub.3 Fe(C.sub.2 O.sub.4).sub.3 .times.3H.sub.2 O to yield a reaction product;
- and in the case where the desired compound is the compound of the formula (I) where R.sup.4 is hydrogen, decomposing the reaction product with an acid to partition the reaction product into an organic layer containing the desired product and an aqueous layer containing the catalyst, and separating the organic layer from the aqueous layer; and in the case where the desired compound is the compound of the formula (I) where R.sup.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoyl or aroyl, acylating the reaction product with an acylating agent to yield the compound of the formula (I) where R.sup.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoyl or aroyl, and isolating the compound of the formula (I).
- 2. The process defined in claim 1 wherein the catalyst is selected from the group which consists of FeCl.sub.3 .times.6H.sub.2 O, FeSO.sub.4 .times.2H.sub.2 O and Fe(NH.sub.4).sub.2 (SO.sub.4).sub.2 .times.6H.sub.2 O.
- 3. The process defined in claim 1 in the case where the desired compound is the compound of the formula (I) wherein R.sup.4 is hydrogen wherein the separated organic layer containing the compound of the formula (I) is purified by distillation.
- 4. The process defined in claim 1 in the case where the desired compound is the compound of the formula (I) wherein R.sup.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoyl or aroyl wherein the acylating agent is an acid anhydride or acid chloride.
- 5. The process defined in claim 4 wherein the acid anhydride is acetic anhydride, in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid.
- 6. The process defined in claim 1 in the case where the desired compound is the compound of the formula (I) wherein R.sup.4 is hydrogen wherein a mixture of hydrochloric acid and water is used to decompose the reaction product.
- 7. The process defined in claim 1 wherein the compound of the formula (II) is isobutylene.
- 8. The process defined in claim 1 wherein the catalyst is used at a concentration of 0.001 to 7.5% by weight calculated with respect to the chloral starting material.
