Claims
- 1. In a process for producing an unsaturated carboxylic acid which comprises contacting a corresponding unsaturated aldehyde with a mixture of oxygen, nitrogen and steam in the presence of a multi-component oxide catalyst selected from the group consisting of P.sub.1.5 Mo.sub.12 V.sub.0.5 Cu.sub.0.5 Ge.sub.0.5 K.sub.1 Sb.sub.0.8, P.sub.1.6 Mo.sub.12 V.sub.0.8 Cu.sub.0.2 Se.sub.0.2 Ag.sub.0.1 Ba.sub.0.1 Rb.sub.1 Sb.sub.0.5 and P.sub.2 Mo.sub.12 W.sub.0.2 Fe.sub.0.5 B.sub.0.2 Ni.sub.0.5 Cs.sub.2 Sb.sub.1, wherein the method for producing said catalyst comprises first dissolving or dispersing the catalyst components in water, except for antimony trioxide, subsequently adding antimony trioxide and driving off the water either before or after the antimony triode is added, the improvement comprising using antimony trioxide having an average particle size of not more than 0.2 micron as a starting material.
- 2. The process according to claim 1 wherein said carboxylic acid is methacrylic acid and said aldehyde is methacrolein.
