Claims
- 1. In a process for the product of diethoxymethane by reacting formaldehyde with ethanol in the presence of an acidic catalyst, the improvement comprising recovering an ethanol/diethoxymethane azeotrope from the reaction production mixture by distillation, adding an agent to the recovered azeotrope which will form an azeotrope with the ethanol, and removing the agent/ethanol-azeotrope by a second distillation, thereby providing substantially pure diethoxymethane.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the agent is cyclohexane, benzene, hexane, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, or cyclohexene.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the molar ratio of ethanol to formaldehyde in the reaction mixture is in the range of about 2 to 10:1.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the azeotropic agent for ethanol in the second distillation is cyclohexane.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein the molar ratio of cyclohexane to ethanol is in the range of from about 0.9-1.1:1.
