Claims
- 1. A process for the manufacture of CF.sub.2 .dbd.CFCF.sub.3 and CF.sub.3 CHFCF.sub.3, comprising:
- (a) feeding CCl.sub.2 .dbd.CClCF.sub.3, HF and Cl.sub.2 to a first reaction zone containing a catalyst comprising trivalent chromium and operating at a temperature of at least 250.degree. C., but not more than about 325.degree. C., to produce a reactor effluent comprising C.sub.3 Cl.sub.3 F.sub.5, C.sub.3 Cl.sub.2 F.sub.6, CF.sub.3 CClFCF.sub.3, HCl and HF;
- (b) distilling the reactor effluent of (a) to produce (i) a low boiling stream comprising HCl, (ii) a reactant stream comprising an azeotrope of CF.sub.3 CClFCF.sub.3 and HF and (iii) a high-boiling stream comprising C.sub.3 Cl.sub.2 F.sub.6 and C.sub.3 Cl.sub.3 F.sub.5 ;
- (c) reacting the CF.sub.3 CClFCF.sub.3 of reactant stream (ii) with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst to produce a mixture comprising CF.sub.2 .dbd.CFCF.sub.3 and CF.sub.3 CHFCF.sub.3 ;
- (d) feeding the C.sub.3 Cl.sub.2 F.sub.6 and C.sub.3 Cl.sub.3 F.sub.5 of high boiling stream (iii) along with HF to a second reaction zone containing a catalyst comprising trivalent chromium and operating at a temperature of at least about 375.degree. C. to produce a reaction product comprising CF.sub.3 CClFCF.sub.3 and HF; and
- (e) recycling the reaction product of (d) to the first reaction zone.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the CCl.sub.2 .dbd.CClCF.sub.3 of (a) is derived by the chlorofluorination of CCl.sub.2 .dbd.CClCCl.sub.3.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrogenolysis of (c) is conducted in the presence of HF.
