Claims
- 1. Free-flowing, particulate material comprising iron-contaning titaniferous particles coated with a carbonaceous, nongaseous reductant and having an average particle size less than 500.mu..
- 2. The particulate material of claim 1 wherein said iron-containing titaniferous material, before coating, has an average particle size in the range 100 .mu. to 450 .mu..
- 3. The particulate material of claim 1 wherein said iron-containing titaniferous material, before coating, has an average particle size in the range 150 .mu. to 350 .mu..
- 4. The particulate material of claim 1 wherein said average particle size is in the range 200 .mu. to 400 .mu. and said particulate material does not contain a substantial amount of particles greater than about 450 .mu. and smaller than about 100 .mu..
- 5. The particulate material of claim 1 wherein said reductant is selected from the group consisting of finely divided coke, graphite and soot.
- 6. The particulate material of claim 1 wherein said reductant is a solid carbonaceous reductant containing a liquid binder.
- 7. The particulate material of claim 6 wherein said particles have been heated to a temperature in the range 300.degree.C. to 400.degree.C. to harden said binder.
- 8. The particulate material of claim 7 wherein said reductant, including binder, provides between 0.5 and 2 times the stoichiometric quantity required to reduce the iron content of the particles to the metallic state.
- 9. The particulate material of claim 8 wherein the amount of reductant is in the range 0.8 to 1.5 times the stoichiometric quantity required to reduce the iron content of the particles to the metallic state.
- 10. The particulate material of clam 1 wherein said reductant further contains a material selected from the group consisting of alkaline earth and an alkali metal compound.
- 11. The particulate material of claim 10 wherein said alkaline earth compound is an alkaline earth oxide and the alkali metal compound is a fluoride or a chloride.
- 12. The particulate material of claim 11 wherein the amount of alkaline earth compound is in the range 1 to 5% and of the alkali metal compound up to 8%, both expressed as the oxide.
- 13. The particulate material of claim 1 wherin said iron-containing titaniferous particles are selected from the group consisting of ilmenite, leucoxene and mineral rutile.
- 14. The particulate material of claim 1 wherein said reductant comprises a solid and the amount of said reductant coated on said particles is in the range 0.5 to 2 times the stoichiometric quantity of reducing agent required to reduce the iron content of the particles to the metallic state.
