Claims
- 1. A process for producing a modified acrylic monomer of the formula II: ##STR9## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.5 are independently a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkylene; R4 is hydrogen or methyl, x is 0 or an integer of 1-6, and y is an integer of 1-6, which comprises an acrylic monomer of the formula VII: ##STR10## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and x are as defined herein, or its caprolactone adduct, with a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkylene glycol carbonate forming a 5-7 membered ring with the carbonate carbon atom, in the presence of a sulfonic acid or a strongly acidic ion exchange resin.
- 2. The process according to claim 1, wherein said acrylic monomer VII is a hydroxy --(C.sub.2 -C.sub.6)-alkyl (meth)acrylate or its .epsilon.-caprolactrone adduct, and wherein said C.sub.2 -C.sub. 6 alkylene glycol carbonate is neopentyl glycol carbonate.
- 3. The process according to claim 1, wherein said sulfonic acid is benzenesulfonic, toluenesulfornic or dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid.
- 4. The process according to claim 1, wherein said acrylic monomer VII is a hydroxy --(C.sub.2 -C.sub.6)-alkyl (meth)acrylate or its .epsilon.-caprolactrone adduct, and wherein said C.sub.2 -C.sub. 6 alkylene glycol carbonate is neopentyl glycol carbonate; and wherein the reaction is conducted in the presence of benzenesulfonic, toluenesulfonic or dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid.
- 5. The process according to claim 4 wherein the acrylic monomer is selected from the group consisting of 2-hydroxyethyl (meth) acrylate, 2-hydroxypropyl(meth)-acrylate, 3-hydroxypropyl(meth)acrylate.
- 6. The process according to claim 1 wherein the acrylic monomer is an .epsilon.-caprolactam adduct of 2-hydroxyethyl(meth)acrylate.
- 7. The process according to claim 1, wherein said acrylic monomer VII is a hydroxy --(C.sub.2 -C.sub.6)-alkyl (meth)acrylate or its .epsilon.-caprolactrone adduct, and wherein said C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkylene glycol carbonate is neopentyl glycol carbonate; and wherein the reaction is conducted in the presence of benzenesulfonic, toluenesulfonic or dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid.
- 8. The process according to claim 1, wherein said sulfonic acid is an aromatic hydrocarbon sulfonic acid.
