Claims
- 1. Process for the recovery of an organophosphorus compound from a solution of at least an organophosphorus compound in an organic solvent which comprises the steps of (1) converting the organophosphorus compound to an iodide complex which is insoluble in the organic solvent;
and (2) separating the insoluble iodide complex from the solution.
- 2. Process according to claim 1 wherein the organophosphorus compound is contacted with molecular iodine to convert the organophosphorus compound to an iodide complex which is insoluble in the organic solvent.
- 3. Process according to claim 1 wherein molecular iodine is added to the solution of the organophosphorus compound to convert the organophosphorus compound to an iodide complex which is insoluble in the organic solvent.
- 4. Process according to claims 1, 2 or 3 wherein the organophosphorus compound is tetrahydrocarbylphosphonium.
- 5. Process according to claim 1, further comprising separating the insoluble iodide complex from the other components of the insoluble complex.
- 6. Process according to claim 5, wherein the separating the insoluble iodide complex comprises washing the iodide complex with a solvent.
- 7. Process according to claim 6, wherein the solvent is water.
- 8. Process for the recovery of an organophosphorus compound from a solution of at least one such organophosphorus compound and an iodine-containing compound in an organic solvent comprising the steps of (1) adding an oxidizing agent to the solution to convert the organophosphorus compound to an iodide complex which is insoluble in the organic solvent; and (2) separating the insoluble iodide complex from the solution.
- 9. Process according to claim 8, further comprising adding elemental iodine to the solution to convert the organophosphorus compound to an iodide complex which is insoluble in the organic solvent.
- 10. Process according to claims 8 or 9 wherein the organophosphorus compound is tetrahydrocarbylphosphonium.
- 11. Process for the recovery of an organophosphorus compound compounds from a solution of at least one such organophosphorus compound and an iodine-containing compound in an organic solvent comprising the steps of (1) adding elemental iodine to the solution to convert the organophosphorus compound to an iodide complex which is insoluble in the organic solvent; and (2) separating the insoluble iodide complex from the solution.
- 12. Process according to claims 1, 8 or 11 wherein the organophosphorus compound is tetrahydrocarbylphosphonium and have the structures:
- 13. Process according to claim 12 wherein the alkyl has 1 to 30 carbons.
- 14. Process according to claim 12 wherein the alkyl has 4 to 10 carbons.
- 15. Process according to claim 12 wherein R1, R2 and R3 are selected from butyl and phenyl.
- 16. Process for the recovery of phosphorus and iodine components from a catalyst solution comprising a Group VIII non-noble metal, methyl iodide and a tetrahydrocarbylphosphonium iodide dissolved in a process solvent comprising acetic acid or a mixture of acetic acid and water which comprises the steps of (1) converting the organophosphonium iodide to an iodide complex of the organophosphonium iodide which is insoluble in the process solvent; and (2) separating the insoluble iodide complex of the organophosphonium iodide from the solution.
- 17. Process according to claim 16 wherein step (1) includes adding molecular iodine to the catalyst solution.
- 18. Process according to claims 16 or 17 wherein step (1) includes adding an oxidizing agent to the catalyst solution.
- 19. Process according to claim 18 wherein that oxidizing agent is oxygen, air, oxygen-enriched air, hydrogen peroxide, ozone or peracetic acid.
- 20. Process according to claim 16, further comprising recycling the insoluble iodide complex to the catalyst solution.
- 21. Process according to claim 16 wherein the tetrahydrocarbylphosphonium iodide has the structure:

Process for the recovery of an organophosphorus compound from a solution having a trihydrocarbyphosphine compound in an organic solvent which comprises the steps of (1) converting the trihydrocarbyphosphine compound to a tetrahydrocarbylphosphonium compound; (2) converting the tetrahydrocarbylphosphonium compound to an iodide complex which is insoluble in the organic solvent; and (3) separating the insoluble iodide complex from the solution.
- 23. Process according to claim 22 wherein the organophosphorus compound is trihydrocarbylphosphine having the structure:
- 24. Process according to claim 23 wherein the alkyl has from 1 to 30 carbons.
- 25. Process according to claim 23 wherein the alkyl has from 4 to 10 carbons.
- 26. Process according to claim 23 wherein R1, R2 and R are selected from butyl and phenyl.
