Claims
- 1. In a process for the recovery of metallic aluminum, mixtures of sodium and potassium chlorides, and an aluminum oxide-metallic aluminum product having high aluminum and low chloride contents from secondary aluminum dross, said process including the steps of providing a secondary aluminum dross feed containing aluminum, aluminum oxide and salts, separating the feed dross by particle size into at least a first dross portion and a second dross portion, treating the first dross portion with leach water to dissolve the salt content thereof wherein the improvement comprises:
- adding a sufficient amount of magnesium chloride to the leach water to maintain the pH of the leach water at a level between about 7-9 during the treating step, thereby reducing the production of ammonia in the treating step and enhancing recovery of metallic aluminum.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the addition of magnesium chloride maintains the pH of the leach water at a level between about 7-8.5.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the magnesium chloride is added to the leach water prior to the treating step.
- 4. The process of claim 2 wherein the amount of magnesium chloride added to the leach water is between about 1%-2%, by weight, of the salt content of the secondary aluminum dross feed.
- 5. In a process for the recovery of various constituents from secondary aluminum dross feed, said process including the steps of providing a secondary aluminum dross feed containing aluminum, aluminum oxide and salts and treating the secondary aluminum dross feed with leach water to dissolve the salt content thereof to produce an aqueous solution of soluble compounds and insolubles, wherein the improvement comprises:
- adding a sufficient amount of magnesium chloride to the leach water to maintain the pH of the leach water at a level between about 7-9 during the treating step, thereby reducing the production of ammonia in the treating step and enhancing recovery of metallic aluminum.
- 6. The method of claim 5, including
- adding said magnesium chloride to maintain the pH of said leach water at a level between about 7-8.5.
- 7. The method of claim 5, including
- the amount of magnesium chloride added to said leach water being between about 1-2% by weight of the salt content of said secondary aluminum dross feed.
- 8. A method of maintaining the pH level of leach water in a process for treating secondary aluminum dross with said leach water, said method comprising:
- adding a sufficient amount of magnesium chloride to said leach water, to maintain the pH of said leach water at a level between about 7-9 whereby the production of ammonia in said process is reduced and the recovery of metallic aluminum is enhanced.
- 9. The method of claim 8, including
- adding said magnesium chloride to maintain the pH of said leach water at a level between about 7-8.5.
- 10. The method of claim 8, including
- the amount of magnesium chloride added to said leach water being between about 1-2% by weight of the salt content of said secondary aluminum dross feed.
