Claims
- 1. A process of reducing a carbonyl compound selected from among aldehydes and ketones to the corresponding carbinol which comprises contacting, in liquid phase, said compound with a porous, solid, insoluble polymeric organotin hydride compound of the formula ##STR16##where P represents an organic polymer; R and R.sub.1 each represent hydrogen, a lower alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, an aryl group having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms, or an aralkyl or alkaryl group having from 7 to 10 carbon atoms; and n is a positive value greater than 1 at a temperature and for a period of time necessary to reduce said carbonyl compound to a reduction reaction product; the amount of said solid polymeric organotin hydride compound used being at least equivalent, in equivalents, to the amount of reduction to be effected; hydrolysing the reduction reaction product to the carbinol by contact with dilute acid and recovering the carbinol.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the temperature during reduction is within the range of from 20.degree. C to 150.degree. C, and the time of reaction is within the range of one hour to 40 hours.
